Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jeffrey Iorio
"There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things," muses Patrick Troughton in the 1967 sci-fi classic Tomb of the Cybermen. And who is more qualified than the Good Doctor to defend us from such intergalactic horrors? From the time Doctor Who premiered in 1963, the groundbreaking sci-fi series built a loyal cult following by continually delivering sharp writing and mind-bending plotlines. Tomb of the Cybermen is no exception, as Doctor Who (with the impish Troughton as the second incarnation of the Doctor) navigates a sea of pernicious pitfalls when an archaeological space expedition goes terribly awry. The fact that we have Cybermen at all is a bit of good fortune; after going missing from the BBC archives for more than 20 years, all four episodes of this story miraculously resurfaced in 1992. Lovingly restored by the BBC, this two-disc collection represents a high-water mark for the high priest of time travel, and is not to be missed.

Patrick Troughton does battle with some of his favorite adversaries (Cybermen) in one of the better Doctor Who stories from long (50 years!) ago.

This story gets some bad lip... but I've always liked it. And here, restored to it's episodic format, you get to experience it right! Patrick Troughton is great as the Doctor, and the Cybermen are, with this story, finally coming to resemble the ''monsters'' they're meant to be. Plus, we meet the Cybermats, and wonder how Jamie manages this cold terrain... You know what they say about Scotsmen and their kilts! The extras are great, too. ;)
