Down Periscope

Vulgar, slapstick comedy abounds in this feature film debut for television sitcom star Kelsey Grammer. Almost everyone else thinks of Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge is a class "A" goof who messes up every task he is assigned, but Adm. Dean Winslow thinks otherwise and decides to give Dodge one last chance by assigning him to helm an outmoded, diesel powered, rusty in a series of wargames. Dodge's sub is to be the enemy and must somehow outsmart their high tech opponents. Though ostensibly only games, Admiral Yancy Graham, who considers Dodge an embarrassment to the Navy, decides to do everything he can to scuttle Dodge and his ragtag crew's mission.

Grammer is clearly enjoying himself here, it's one of the funniest movies I've ever scene! Hopefully it will come to bluray soon.

I bought this for my father since he loved it and is a Navy veteran. He could actually relate to some of the crazy antics that are done in this movie since he was stationed at obscure bases all over the world. I highly recommend this comedy to military vets.

Good mix of well played characters by well known and unknown actors. Fast paced fun. If only the Navy actually worked this way.

This movie may be old and be considered by many younger people as "old" but this movie makes up for that factor in many aspects. The acting in this movie was hilarious. The jokes in this movie never get old and at any awkward moment (within your family) are good to quote (they work in mine) and it gets everyone laughing. This movie will make you laugh your socks off with constant streams of jokes - one after the other. Jokes that never get old after the second watching. I would recommend this movie for 12 year olds and up as there is some rude humor but still - GREAT MOVIE.

Great movie, if not entirely accurate. I loved the way the crew burst out laughing when the XO (a lieutenant-yeah right!) asked Lt. Cdr. Dodge to turn over command to him. Five out of Five!

Thurs: 12 april 2007 many might not believe it, but this bunch of comical derelicts are the type that really do "make it happen" !!! this one will strike a chord with guys that have been at sea, more so than those that have not!!!

Although in the tradition of military goof offs making good, the plot is novel and well done. Kelsey Grammar is superb, as are the rest of the cast, which includes some big names like Bruce Dern, Rip Torn, and William Macy. I can watch it again and again and still get laughs.

Kelsey Grammer and crew do a wonderful job of making me laugh. From ''sparks'' taking too much voltage to the XO ringing his ''bell'' going down the ladder to the cook creating an explosion at the wrong moment to Grammer commenting on the arrival of one of his men being escorted by shorepatrol with, ''Oh, here comes the Chaplain''. Being an old Navy man myself, I have to add that the spirit of the old Navy was captured quite well. The ''can do'' attitude, the stirring rendition of ''Anchors Away'', the Pirate scenes, and the genuine NAVY ''dirty tricks dept'' Grammer uses during his mission all combine to not only make me laugh but a bit proud too. This movie is just plain fun. Cant beleive it aint out on DVD yet. What is you peoples major malfunction???!!!???

No, this isn't Battleship Potemkin, but it is a little gem of a film. The writing, by TV great Hugh Wilson, is crisp and smart. The acting (or, in Rob Schneider's case, overacting) is spot-on. This is the kind of fun movie you can watch again and again. I have. Like the ''Major League'' movies, it gets you rooting for the underdogs and makes you feel good when they win.

This is a very funny movie.I watch if all the time with my family and when I can't think of anythings else to watch, I will watch it again by myself. So Please, put this movie on DVD.

Great film, very funny. The film grows on you and is fun to watch several times to pickup some of the little ways they setup the running jokes. Even if you are not easily moves to laughter, by the time the sub ''goes silent'' for Buckman's untimely gas, well from there on it's got you. We too have watched it many times. The tape is now unusable. Please press the DVDs. My guess is it will be a much larger seller than anyone expects.
