Overview

Dumbo

The shortest of Disney's major animated features Dumbo involves a baby elephant with unusually large ears. Ostracized from the rest of the circus animals, poor Dumbo is even separated from his mother, who is chained up in a separate cage after trying to defend her child. Only brash-but-lovable Timothy Mouse offers the hand of friendship to Dumbo, encouraging the pouty pachyderm to exploit his "different" qualities for fame and fortune. After trepidatiously indulging in a vat of booze, Dumbo awakens in a tall tree. Goaded by a group of jive-talking crows, Dumbo discovers that his outsized ears have given him the ability to fly. The musical score by Frank Churchill and Oliver Wallace won Oscars for them both.

'Dumbo' is the delightful tale of a floppy-eared elephant that comes into his own when he realizes, with the aid of Timothy Q. Mouse (vocal by Edward Brophy) that he can fly. Filled with Uncle Walt's masterful gifts of storytelling and memorable music, this is a genuine treasure that, no matter your age, will warm your heart. For those new to the film, the scene in which Dumbo's mother is imprisoned warrants bringing a box of Kleenex. Coupled with the song, 'Baby Mine', it's truly heart-breaking. Sterling Holloway narrates as Mr. Stork and the outstanding vocal ensemble includes Cliff Edwards as Jim Crow and Margaret Wright as the spirited steam engine ¿ Casey Jr. The transfer on Dumbo is outstanding. This is a rich and vibrant animated picture that completely captures the spirit and vitality of Disney animation. There is a bit of film grain and some minor age related artifacts present but nothing to distract. Also, some edge enhancement does crop up now and then. Colors are solid and vibrant. Contrast levels are bang on. The audio has been remastered and remixed and is very nicely spread. Extras include a making-of documentary, some short subjects and a theatrical trailer. All-in-all, great good fun. 'Dumbo' is a family classic. It sparkles with the kind of innocence and mastery in the craft of animation that is sadly lacking from Disney's current crop of feature films.

One of my favorites as a child and the music is upbeat and entertaining. I will never forget this one.

A classic Disney feature with the adorable Dumbo. Little elephant, big ears and a lot of heart! A great addition to your home DVD library.
