Elvis Costello's love of music is clearly in play in the first season of "Spectacle" from the Sundance Channel. It's part music master class, part artist showcase and completely entertaining. Season One kicks off with an interview with Sir Elton John. "For all of (Elton John's) successes, poeple don't realize he's a great fan of music," Costello told the Associated Press. "They assume he's this flamboyant guy who has hit records. They don't know that it's grounded in a great love and tremendous knowledge about music." Costello doesn't ask guests Lou Reed, James Taylor, The Police, Rufus Wainwright, President Bill Clinton, Norah Jones, Herbie Hancock, Renee Fleming, or wife Diana Krall about old boyfriends/girlfriends, or who designed their outfit for the Grammys. Instead he gets his guests talking about their enthusiams, inspirations and thier love of the craft. "Spectacle" is as alternative as Costello was in the 80's. The sometimes prickly musician and talk show host puts his guests at ease; matching them note for note in jam sessions that viewers will cherish over and over again. Spectacle is truly the very best of Elvis Costello.
