In this animé feature based on the popular Japanese television series, Hitomi is a high school student who is trying to come to terms with a severe case of depression. When her spirits are at their lowest, Hitomi makes a psychic connection with Van, the young king of the nation of Gaia, located on another planet visible in the night sky of Earth. Gaia has been brought to the brink of war by the evil Black Dragon Clan, and, while the nearby nation of Abaharaki wishes to form an alliance with Gaia for their mutual protection, Van is a leader who prefers to act on his own. Hitomi finds herself transported to Gaia, where she becomes a valuable if unlikely ally to Van; as the Black Dragon Clan advances, Van discovers that Hitomi may hold the key to the magical dragon armor of Escaflowne, the weapon that would make Gaia invincible. Escaflowne (also advertised as Escaflowne the Movie: A Girl in Gaia) features Kelly Sheridan as the voice of Hitomi; the voice cast for the American release version also includes Kirby Morrow, Brian Drummond, and Paul Dobson.

A re-interpretation the 1996 TV series seen recently on Fox Kids, Escaflowne: The Movie is an outstanding action-adventure, pure and simple. A bored high school girl named Hitomi finds herself whisked away from her mundane life in Tokyo to a war-torn parallel world called Gaia lorded over by a feudal clan. Turns out Hitomi is the fabled Wing Goddess of prophecy and gets to pilot a robot-like giant suit of living armor called Escaflowne. Whether in Japan or in the West, few anime films have been given the treatment on home video that Escaflowne: The Movie enjoys. For the remarkable Ultimate Edition, a sturdy blue box opens up to reveal three separate, bonus-packed DVDs and a 20-page booklet. The first contains the film itself, along with an isolated score and optional real-time storyboards. The second disc offers a wealth of Escaflowne extras, including a "making of" featurette, an art gallery, and footage from the film's premiere. The third disc affords the original soundtrack. With an expansive package like this, even newcomers will be impressed by the amount of work and depth of creativity involved in bringing such a film to the screen. Fans of the show and film will be in heaven. Volk Lindsay

I bought the movie and dont get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Escaflowne. Thing was I bought it BRAND NEW and thats what I expected to get. Sure it was wrapped like new but when I looked on the film side (bottom of the cd where it counts) there was a couple drops of unknown substance like soap or something. It upset me. I am a cheap skate and look only for bargains but I only buy bargains if its in new condition. I was Some what Unpleased with the results. I wanted to return it but didnt want to have to wait longer for the replacement -.- email rashelleym@gmail if youd like to talk it out.

This movie was to be a theatrical relese for Escaflowne the series, but it's a big hit! Without Hitomi's unusual tarot-card readings every scene and Merle's obsessive disliking of her, this movie really has smoothed out the rougher points of the series. Folken is made to look more powerful and less down-to-earth, which makes him look weaker in the series. But this, of course, is just the beginning. I suggest this movie to anyone and everyone who has heard of Escaflowne and fell in love with it. And even if you haven't, this movie will maybe change your opinion. (It sure changed mine.)

this is my favorite movie in the world!!! i mean combining romance and robotic armor is just out of this world.plus ths is a cross-genre of science fiction and fantasy, which i would like to call''new science fiction'' anyways this is just the must see movie that i just can't not watch. SO WATCH IT!!!

This movie is a bit gory, and the ending leaves you thinking, but it also makes you love it!

Another one of my favorites next to Princess Mononoke. This is a story of its own than the show, Escaflowne is about a girl who is magically sent to another world in order to help the people who's world is being taken over by the main characters brother thus releasing the legendary weapon called Escaflowne.

Well this movie, to be honest, I was not to sure about buying, some of my friends said dont do it, its not worth buying but you know what it is worth buying, the quality of animation and the story plot was great and it leaves you wanting more, I think you would enjoy this anime, it gives you a lot of deep thinking and excitement, well worth buying.

While this movie has stunning graphics and a well written storyline, it failed to catch my attention as in the Escaflone series. I was looking forward to great sword fights and more use of the Escaflone. Most of the movie gradually introduces you to the world of Gaia and not enough action to get the blood pumping.

While this Anime feature does not have the visual impact of Princess Mononoke. The sound track of Yoko Kanno is absolutely spell binding. Sora, The Dragon Song reaches into to your soul, While the battle scenes are backed by an orchestral, choral performance which makes the battle between the white and black Escaflowne armor special. Without this musical back drop Escaflowne would not have the impact this romance story would other wise have.

I really enjoyed this movie. The animation was great and the ending left you wanting more, but at the same time if the ending wasn't what it was then it would have made the movie incomplete. I recommend it to anyone who likes anime.

This is my absolute favourite animé. It's similar to the series, yet unique in it's own way.

This is basically the entire series crammed into a movie, which I thought wasn't too good of an idea. The basic concept of this movie is great and it can really catch your interest, but I'd suggest getting the series instead because they're pretty much the same thing. This is a little light on the details, and it doesn't explain the characters like it should. The series goes in depth and side tracks on each persons own love story, which I thought was interesting. In conclusion, a good movie, but the actual series is much better.

Escaflowne the series was quite a great series, but the movie falls tradgically short of its predecessor. A Girl in Gaea doesn't have quite as good animation as the series had. The characters look quite...rugged. The storyline just didn't catch my attention like the series did.

At first, I was reluctant to see this because I heard that it was different from the tv series (REALLY different)...but then, I had a change of heart and bought it anyway. And WOW. The animation is BEAUTIFUL!! You can see right away how detailed the shawdowing and drawings are!! And the story is good too, even though it was totally different from the tv series. I loved it!!! ^^

I feel sorry that Escaflowne had stood under the shadow of Evangelion.

Without giving things away, the way the plot was adapted from TV to film was amazing. While many fans were disappointed in the series, the movie is more than redeeming.

Let me tell you something .. simply its one of the best for animation fans, animators, designers and any artist.

Some people may be rather criticising towards Escaflowne:A Girl In Gaia; you constantly hear that it can't be topped, because of the outstanding level of the series before. But, casting the series aside, the Escaflowne Movie, is, in essence, a darn good movie! It delivers an exciting storyline, remoriable characters, stunningly gorgeous animation and a music score to make your heart melt. A great set of voice actors, both in English and the original Japanese version, who deliver their lines almost spot on... Even though I admit, the series is better, I cannot deny my love for this film. Series-to-Movie programmes usually go disasterously, but in my opinion, this one has come up trumps!! A must see!
