Ever After

Andy Tennant directs Ever After, a period romance that reimagines the Cinderella legend with several fresh twists. The Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor. In flashback, the story then focuses on eight-year-old Danielle, daughter of a wealthy widower, a 16th-century landowner. After returning to France with his new wife Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston) and her two daughters, he dies of a heart attack. Ten years later, Danielle (Drew Barrymore) is now treated as a servant by the trio. Fortunately, she has an encounter with Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Later, when Danielle poses as a Lady, the Prince takes an interest in her. Inventor-artist Leonardo da Vinci (Patrick Godfrey), accepting the French court's patronage, offers advice to Prince Henry on matters of the heart. George Fenton's music adds an accompaniment to the lush look of this period romance.

I teach 8th ngrade French, so Ever After, shown in French with English subtitles, is a perfect choice for my students. It's set in 16th century France with some beautiful chateaux in evidence. Not only do the girls love it, but the boys can identify with the prince, with Leonardo DaVinci and with the strong character of Danielle. I, too, have no problem showing this film to 13 and 14 year olds. There is maybe one scene that is at all iffy (with M. LePieu), but it comes and goes quickly and it shows the strength and independence of the heroine. This movie is at the top of my list for adolescents as well as adults.

I have watched this movie many times. I have it in the DVD player in my sewing room and play it a lot. The music is nice, the story gives a little twist now and then to the old favorite. Any age would love this story.

Love this movie,I had watch this movie with my daughters, so many times that I don't see why and at the same time, we don't live this kind of romance on this days. Love it, is so interesting, cause you learn from it how to be a better person........

Drew Barrymore has always been my favorite actress, because of this fact; I love every movie she is in no matter how stupid or well done it is. This movie is one of the well-done ones I would say. The casting to me could not be more perfect for the parts they played. Angelica Huston was the perfect example of the evil stepmother. Just her look alone to me was perfect. Danielle and Henry (Barrymore and Scott) worked so well together. In some movies they cast people well for the parts but as a whole they cannot interact well. My favorite part in the whole movie had to be the kiss!! It was so cute the way Danielle looked at Henry right before they kissed. If I were able to pick the best onscreen kiss it would definitely be them! Overall it was the perfect Cinderella love story. I laughed I cried and anyone who loves sappy love movies, this one is for you! =P

This movie is awesome! It just makes me feel good; like one person can make a difference: in her own life, in someone's else's life, in the world. I love love stories, and happy endings.

This movie made me so happy, it was a time honored tale with a twist. Young girls should watch this movie especially! This movie has something for everyone, whether it be sword fights, or the romance between Dougray Scott anbd Drew Barrymore! I think that Dougray was perfect for the role, as well as Drew! I hope that more flims come out like this, violence, profanity and sex are not the only ways to have a great movie! Although Dougray's crouth are was a tempting to stare at! Get the soundtrack, it rocks!

I think this movie is so cute. I believe it is a movie you'll love and watch over and over again. It shows dreams really can come true and that love doesn't have a status.

It is so important to show girls that the handsome prince is not the answer to all happiness. Drew portrays a 21st century Cinderella even though the story is set in a mid evil time - smart, strong, and very capable - and she is still a girl, looking for love. She would have been ''successful'' even without marrying the prince. The piece de resistance is the Leonardo DeVinci charactor - introducing him to young girls is the perfect next step for further exposure to art, science and history.

This is my favorite movie of all time. It shows how two people with different backgrounds can fall in love without anyone caring and run through all the things that come their way.

The thing that got me hooked on this movie is that I could relate to Danielle. We had certain things in common even though we were centuries apart. The way that it was also written, letting it include Danielle's grand-daughter, played by Jeanne Moreau, in the first scene was a superb opening. The actors and actresses helped bring out the Cinderella-esque quality in the video. I'm giving great thanks to Anjelica Huston, and the actors who played main roles like Leonardo DaVinci, Danielle's best friend Gustaf, and the evil step-sister (one's good!).The convincing love between Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott was great. I could feel Danielle's pain throughout. Not to mention the actress who played the queen had a role on the television series ER. The movie is set in the 15th century of France, making the movie a renaisance time period. The clothes to match the time were good work of the designer, the dresses were fabulous but the crotch area of Prince Henry (Dougray Scott) made me blush a little. The movie was filmed on location and the castle where the Prince lived had beautiful towers all around with the tops sea blue with the ground set in cobblestone. The architechture of the castle made the movie come alive with the Cindrella-Snow White combination Fairy Tale.

I love this movie and watched it many times. The most important lesson I learnt from it is to have passion for life and appreciate life every day. I'm a better person after watching this movie, I think Hollywood should produce more of such movies that inspire people to be better.
