ABC's one-season war series The Gallant Men dramatized the WWII-era Allied struggle for domination of Italy, but gains more relevance now because it gave director Robert Altman (M*A*S*H, Short Cuts) one of his earliest assignments; accordingly, it demonstrates Altman's multilayered humanism. The program stars Robert McQueeney as Conley Wright, a war reporter assigned to the platoon of Captain Benedict (William Reynolds). Episodes dramatize the day-to-day experiences of foot soldiers as they become pawns of a larger war machine. This sprawling box set contains 26 episodes, the entire run of the series. Robert Ridgely (Boogie Nights) co-stars.
