Overview

Garrow's Law: Series 1

A passionate young barrister leads a legal revolution in this superb new courtroom drama set in 18th-century England. Appalled by the corruption of London’s Old Bailey, William Garrow (Andrew Buchan) advocates for the accused and pioneers the art of cross-examination, paving the way for our modern legal system. Aided by his mentor solicitor John Southhouse (Alun Armstrong) and the beautiful Lady Sarah Hill (Lyndsey Marshal), he faces down ruthless bounty hunters; callous judges, smug solicitors, and MP Sir Arthur Hill (Rupert Graves), who sees Garrow as a threat to the law -- and his marriage. Based on a true story and drawing on actual Old Bailey court records, this award-winning series follows Garrow as he argues his first cases, rails against outdated legal practices, and shows that one man can indeed change everything. Garrow’s Law intially aired in this four-feature series on the BBC in November, 2009. Winner of a Royal Television Society award for best history program, the series features compelling plots, lavish sets and costumes, and an outstanding cast. This 2-disc set includes the four episodes of Series 1, a bonus 19-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, cast filmographies, and more.

What a brilliant, delightful, inspiring and entertaining piece! This is based on a true story and legal cases from the late 1800’s ~ still very relevant to today. The young, barrister apprentice William Garrow decided to change the legal system from the corrupt entertainment spectacle to a system seeking the truth and justice. Often to appease the masses, poor innocent people were arrested with no counsel. People were paid off or made deals to give false testimony and/or evidence. This included judges, prosecutors, accusers and witnesses. As Mr. Garrow saw this while studying courtroom procedures, he was shocked and committed to see justice served. It also shows how Sarah Hill a woman who also wanted a healthy and just change, was limited by social standards, but did what she could to support and contribute to the historical shift in trials, the handling of evidence and the accused. The stories include court cases researched from the Old Bailey archives. The acting, directing, costuming and sets are great! Mr. Garrow is the barrister who changed the phrase from “guilty until proven innocent” ~ a hopeless possibility for most ~ to what is almost regularly used today, “innocent until proven guilty.”

This series uses transcripts from the Old Bailey to create historical fiction that reminds the viewer of the tenuous boundaries between law and justice. It also reminds the viewer that thoroughout Western history visionaries had to fight to create a legal system that may not be without flaws, but still remains one of the best legal systems in the world. Although the series is based on history, the ideas presented are timely and relevant ... even today. The characters are well developed, with plenty of hubris. I look forward to the second series in August.
