Grey Gardens (2009)Director: Michael Sucsy
Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange headline this fact-based drama centered on the two eccentric relatives of Jackie Kennedy-Onassis who served as the subject of David and Albert Maysles' similarly-titled 1975 documentary. Directed, produced, and co-written (along with Patricia Rozema) by Michael Sucsy, Grey Gardens tells the story of Big Edie (Lange) and Little Edie (Barrymore), the aunt and cousin of Kennedy-Onassis respectively. The reclusive socialites made headlines across the country when the health department threatened to raid their sprawling, flea-and-raccoon-infested twenty-eight room East Hampton, NY mansion in the early-1970s, prompting Kennedy-Onassis herself to intervene in an attempt to save the family name. Jane Tripplehorn stars as former first lady Kennedy-Onassis in a film also featuring Daniel Baldwin, Ken Howard, Malcolm Gets, and Ayre Gross.

To fans of the original Maysles documentary, this needs no introduction. It answers questions raised from the documentary and, perhaps, poses new ones. The performances by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange are stellar - both characters are on point! The story at times is a sad one, yet this mother/daughter duo thumbed their noses at the outside world and created a world of their own. Delusional? Perhaps... Or one may think it of it as armor against a world that thought them "odd". No matter what you think of the original documentary, this is a must-see - and should be considered forever a part of "Grey Gardens" history.
HAVING SEEN THE ORIGINAL. I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS AND IT WAS EXCELLANT I AM GLAD JESSICA LANGE RECEIVED AN EMMMY JUST WISH IT COULD HAVE BEEN A TIE AS DREW BARRYMORE DESERVED AN EMMY AS WELL WELL DONE LADIES WELL DONE
From the very start the movie caught my attention. I was blown away from the acting, and the wonderful story, and the filming. I just bought the DVD for my sister-in-law to view. I usually watch a movie while reading a book, news paper, magizine,or chatting on the phone. This movie had my full attention till the very end,and I can still see it in my minds eye.
The ladies are so right on their characters. Once you watch the "extras" you will agree. The "real" women were very interesting people and Drew & Jessica bring out the best and worst of them as mother/daughter and women. Underneath all their eccentricity there are 2 very emotional and loving women. Showing the film as a film within a film made the whole experience very real.
Jessica Lange & Drew Barrymore nailed essence of the life at Grey Gardens as documented by the Maysle's. I enjoyed film and felt it remained true to the story.
This was a truly fascinating movie! The extras tied the real people to the actors. My hat goes off to both Drew and Jessica for their extrordinary performances. They captured the true essence of what acting is all about.
