In this high-tech thriller, Dade Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller) has been fascinated with computers all his life; at the age of 11, he was able to break into the computer network of several top Wall Street investment and banking firms, and he nearly caused a major stock market crash in the process. As punishment, Dade was forbidden to use a computer until his 18th birthday, but now that he's of age, he's diving back into his PC head first. Dade meets up with a group of fellow hackers: tough-talking cyber gamer Kate, aka Acid Burn (Angelina Jolie), junior hacker Jesse Bradford, born prankster Cereal Killer (Matthew Lillard), Nikon (Lawrence Mason), named for his photographic memory, and telephone expert Phantom Phreak (Renoly Santiago). Dade and his pals aren't out to destroy systems or do cybercrime for profit; they simply want to know more about the systems they encounter, and they like raising some good-natured havoc. But in their travels through cyberspace, they discover The Plague (Fisher Stevens), a former hacker turned computer security expert with a huge multinational corporation. The Plague has not only done the unthinkable and gone into anti-hacker enforcement, he's secretly allied himself with a group of criminals and is using his expertise to drain funds from corporate bank accounts and transfer them to himself and his mistress, Margo (Lorraine Bracco). The Plague is also smart enough to leave clues that would lead investigators to someone else -- in this case, Dade and his friends -- and has a secret weapon at his disposal, a computer virus that could wipe out the entire world wide web in a matter of minutes. Several sequences for Hackers were shot at New York City's Stuyvesant High School, where coincidentally several months after filming, several students were arrested by F.B.I. agents for their involvement in computer hacking.

This movie was made in the 1990's, so obviously the computers are now obsolete. But it's still a powerful story, with strong and diverse characters. The main characters are Dade, Kate, Cereal, Nikon, and Plague. Dade, Kate, Cereal, Nikon were Teen Hackers. Dade was more than that. He was literally a computer genius. As a child he'd created a computer virus of legendary destructive capacity. Though he was no longer dangerous, nothing could confine Dade or the others to law abiding limits of cyber space. When an Arrogant Federal Officer goes after their friends, Dade and Kate proceed to harass him in return. They use various cyber attacks to make his life a living hell. For Dade and Kate, that was both a revenge and a duel. They were seeing which was the best. The ignorant Fed never knew what was happening. Plague was an adult Hacker. He hadn't any allegiance to company or country. He lived in cyber space and used his skills to steel vast amounts of money. Then decided to frame Dade, Kate, Cereal, and Nikon for his crimes. Those four were great, but not a match for the Feds and Plague. So they put a battle cry out on the web "Hackers of the World Unite" All across the globe others answered that call. In a powerful digital battle they showed the world who truly owns cyber space.

I remember the first time I saw this movie all my friends told me it was awesome, I went and saw it for myself and I have to say that I agree w/ them. Not only do you have some of today's biggest stars, Matthew Lillard, and Angelina Jolie, but it is so much fun to watch. You find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat durning some of the chase scenes. It's a great movie to watch w/ your friends so go and rent it, if you don't like it well then Hey! If you do, it won't hurt to go out and buy it and watch it all the time!

Set when computers were slow and the world was unaware, these hackers attempt to break into a Gibson server and save the world. But their plans are foiled by an evil hacker, who has both inserted a virus and a worm to steal and destroy the company. These hackers have to face jail, a deception within their own numbers and getting the rest of the world on their side. This movie encompasses comedy, imagination and a romantic connection between two powerful hackers. Johnny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie provide a unique and stylish look into the world of hackers!

Hackers is a great movie for those of us who grew up in this age of computers.I mean come on who never wanted to hack into a computer to change grades, credit card debt? It is one of those films you never can get sick of, with it's constant action and heartpumping techno music. The only bad thing is it was made in 1995, which means we're getting old. Hack The Planet!

If you dont know a whole lot about computers, and more specificly computer hacking, this movie will most likely appeal to anyone who like a sci fi tech thriller. If one the other hand you know about computers, this movie takes a turn into being a more comical light hearted movie.

This movie is my most favorite movie of all times. Its the best movie to come out of the year 1995, with 2 major stars. The timing and how everything is put together is excellent. Their are no really bad parts to the movie and the music is the best with Prodigy and Orbital, which are the top techno music groups ever.

This movie is a true winner. I saw it with some friends, and I got hooked. This is one of my favorites. I work with computers a lot, so I really understood what was happening. If I could sum it up in to 2 words, they would be: RENT IT!

There's no "8-page booklet" to be had here, just a DVD and a case. The original release did come with a booklet, but the 1998 reprint removed it in order to reduce productions costs. The newer case design reflects this change, no longer advertising a booklet amongst its features. B&N is advertising the original, but filling orders with the reprint. Hopefully they'll update this page to reflect the change. This is otherwise a great buy if you loved "Hackers" as a child, but it requires the same suspension of critical thinking as one might bring to any "Star Wars" film to fully enjoy.
