Adam Shankman's adaptation of the stage musical Hairspray, itself an adaptation of the non-musical John Waters film of the same name, stars Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, an overweight high-school student whose only dream is to be on a local Baltimore teen dance program. While her father (Christopher Walken) tells her to follow her dreams, her mother Edna (John Travolta in drag) reminds her that she doesn't look like the girls on that show. After impressing the show's host (James Marsden), Tracy earns a coveted spot on the program, but when she becomes a popular addition to the cast, she earns the wrath of the prettiest girl in school -- a girl whose mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) just happens to operate the local television station. Tracy's visit to detention hall opens her eyes to the racial tension on the show, as does the budding relationship between her best friend (Amanda Bynes) and an African-American boy named Seaweed (Elijah Kelley). Thus empowered, Tracy attempts to integrate the races on her favorite program.

All Movie Guide
Hairspray starts out with such a contagious burst of delightfulness, it's no surprise this feeling isn't quite sustainable over two hours. A true confection in every sense, the film would work better if it were bite-sized. However, because John Waters' 94-minute 1988 film was given the Broadway treatment, and this is an adaptation of that version, it's fattened up by its quantity of production numbers. Some of these are wonderful, like the opening "Good Morning Baltimore" number that immerses us in this pastel world, and the show-stopping "You Can't Stop the Beat" later on. Other songs take on the quality of filler, even if it's pretty pleasing filler. Still, these are relatively minor complaints in an otherwise joyous viewing experience. Hairspray is perfectly cast, from what should be a star-making performance from Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, to the wicked scenery chewing of Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma Von Tussle, to John Travolta's sweet and heartfelt performance as Tracy's mother, Edna. Travolta's appearance in drag was a topic of discussion about Hairspray, specifically, what it might indicate about the actor's much-discussed sexuality (Divine, the originator of the role, was an actual drag queen). But it certainly doesn't play as a gimmick, and he has great chemistry with an equally delightful Christopher Walken during their backyard number "You're Timeless to Me." Also timeless are the issues of racial mainstreaming, which give Hairspray more thematic meat than its buoyant production design would suggest. It's a career best for director/choreographer Adam Shankman, who'd been stuck toiling away in throwaway comedies (Cheaper by the Dozen 2, The Pacifier). And in case you're wondering whether Shankman's version has Waters' stamp of approval, watch the opening scene closely for a cameo by the eccentric director, contributing his famously naughty sense of humor by playing a flasher.

Fortunately, I know about the 2007 movie Hairspray due to my time of living on the Mayport Naval Base. A friend from work and I both agreed to see Hairspray after noticing that it was playing at one of the movie theaters connected to a mall. Anyhow, this movie has many famous celebrities attached to the film (John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, and more celebrities featured etc). Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) loves dancing so much and her interest with the Corny Collins show gives her an added fire and determination with her dancing. Tracy’s mother Edna Turnblad loves her daughter very much but is also a little overprotective of her at times. Overall, it is with good intentions because Edna only wants the best for Tracy without letting her get too crushed by the what ifs that could happen in life. Obviously, there is so much more to this film which is great for those who have enjoyed and/or liked the previous 1988 Hairspray film and/or enjoy watching movies that also happen to be musicals

Best movie of the year? Yes! One of the greatest movie musicals made? YES! Best movie ever? YES! With catchy tunes, amazing vocals, and great moves. This may be the happiest movie of the year. Amanda Bynes showed suprising vocal abilitys,Zac Efron was great,Nikki Blonsky was born to play Tracy Turnblad.Queen Latifah was awesome.John Travolta, sexyy haha!Michelle Pffifer was amazing as well. Christopher Walken-not so much.Worst part of the movie was Travolta and Walkens love song "You're Timeless to Me" they had no chemistry at all.But things picked up with "Without Love" amazing. And you can't help but smile during "You Cant Stop The Beat"

I love Hairspray. It was very good. But instead of the 2- disc edition why don't you get the giftset in either "Penny Pink" or "Link Lime" which includes the 2-disc edition. The metal locker, tote bag, and stickers. The 2-disc edition DVD includes Commentary with director Adam Shankmman, star Nikki Blonksky, and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. Deleted scenes with audio commentary. Also it includes a you can't stop the beat: The long journey to Hairspray documentary. Next it includes a dance featurette and a Hairspray Extensions extreme. Wiat there's more. Jump to a song feature. All new musical number "I can't wait" and the theatrical trailer. All just for $22.99. I'm picking up my Link Lime giftset on Nov. 20!

I realize this movie hasn't come out on DVD yet, but let me just say that I have seen this movie 5 times in the theatre and I listen to the soundtrack almost daily! This movie is so upbeat and uplifting that no matter what mood you go see it in, you will leave with a smile. I find the story line truely inspiring b/c big can be beautiful and this movie comes with some sage advise, such as..."who wants a twig when you can have a whole tree"!

Althought I am a fan of John Waters version of Hairspray, this one is also excellent. I thing John Travolta did a great job as Edna, this role is a hard one to pull off since he had to do this in drag and wear alot of pounds. I enjoyed it very much.

IF one movie musical I would wacth every day it would be "HAIRSPRAY"! John Travolta's performence is one of the best performence's I have ever seen.Zac Efron's motion picture debut is outstanding. "HAIRSPRAY" is a must see movie for everyone! The music is outstanding, the dances are out of this world and the meesage of racial equality holds the movie!

This movie made me smile and tap my feet to the beat. Whats not to like about it? It has a sweet message, and truly is, as one reviewer has said, "A celebration of song and dance."

From all the reviews of this movie I thought it would be fantastic, but after watching the film I completely disagreed. The choreography was horrible, the dancing was terrible, and the acting...well lets just say it was non existent. It is amazing what people consider a good movie today.

This is my all time FAVORITE movie! How much do I like it? My family has kept a count and I have seen it over 35 times! The songs are amazing, the casting/characters could not be better, and everything else about it has exceeded all standards. This movie is recommended for anyone who loves to come out of a theater smiling and wanting to see it again. Anyone who has ever seen my room knows I am a fanatic! I think everyone needs to see this movie at least once in their life !

Hairspray the movie was amazing. I loved the music, the excitment, and of course the dancing. The movie is if not better, as good as the wonderful broadway play.

I think that I'm a lot older than the other reviewers, but I gotta say that Hairspray made me feel as young as they are! I grew up in the 60's, and the film had me coming out singing, like when I was a kid and saw Mary Poppins. Great feel good movie. I also remember that I had the chance to see the play here in Las Vegas COMPED, but at the time I turned it down. What an MOOK!!! A truly sublime suprise for all who watch it!
