I watched this movie to discern whether or not it would be useful for a book discussion on Hard Times. I found it generally faithful to the story, but lacking. The horrors of the polluted factory town as well as the impoverishment and dehumanization of the workers wasn't really shown. It also seemed poorly cast in places, with acting that was awkward. They did a terrific job casting Louisa, though, and Hard Times is not the most "cinematic" of Dickens' novels, since it is far more satirical and thematic and the characters do sometimes fade into the background of his social criticism.

I love watching BBC productions of all the literary classics. However, this particular movie is now my number one least favorite of all the ones I have seen. I was very disappointed in the acting and overall production of this film. Extremely disappointing. Do not waste your time or money to see this! Skip it and watch Our Mutal Friend!
