Overview

"Hearts in Atlantis, another in a series of films adapted from Stephen King novels, makes a wonderful translation to DVD. The image, which is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and, as would be expected, is anamorphic, is sharp and duplicates the theatrical experience as close as a disc can get. Sound, with a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, is equally impressive, even if it doesn't take advantage of the entire sound spectrum. Dialogue is clear and lacks any distortion, showing excellent audio mastering. The disc also features a soundtrack in French as well as subtitles in English and French. Though not really a special edition, this DVD does contain some fine supplemental materials. Of strong interest is a commentary track from soft spoken director Scott Hicks. He fills the time with valuable anecdotes that enhance the viewing of the film. Of great interest is a 30-minute interview with Anthony Hopkins. He is interviewed by Hicks and both have many insightful comments, not only about this film, but Hopkins' career and his acting style. Finally, there is a brief photo gallery and the theatrical trailer, making this a DVD that stands out in nearly every way."

One of 2001's most underrated movies, Hearts in Atlantis is a gentle, unassuming coming-of-age drama with a memorable star turn from the brilliant Anthony Hopkins. Adapted from a Stephen King novelette by Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman, Hearts unfolds mostly in flashback from the perspective of middle-aged Robert Garfield (played by David Morse), whose bittersweet return to his hometown brings back specific memories of his childhood. As a sensitive 11-year-old (Anton Yelchin), he had craved the affection of his bitter, emotionally distant mother, Elizabeth (Hope Davis), but settled instead for the adoration of his first love, beautiful classmate Carol Gerber (Mika Boorem). One fateful summer, their lives changed forever with the arrival at the Garfield home of new boarder Ted Brautigan (Hopkins), a mysterious loner whose dark secrets and cataleptic trances didn't prevent him from befriending Bobby at a crucial time. Goldman's screenplay omits the supernatural elements of King's tale and substitutes a more mundane, traditional menace; director Scott Hicks (Snow Falling on Cedars) further downplays this aspect of the story in favor of simple, straightforward, and occasionally heart-tugging drama. Hopkins dominates the film with his understated, pitch-perfect performance, conveying more with a raised eyebrow or a wistful sigh than most actors could with a whole page of dialogue. He's the glue that holds Hearts in Atlantis together, and that strong bond makes this unexpectedly tender movie one you absolutely should not miss. Hopkins joins Hicks in a filmed interview included on the DVD, which also offers a full-length commentary by the director, some theatrical trailers, and a photo gallery.
