This is the one that started it all -- creator/director Clive Barker's sadistic, horrific Hellraiser. Anchor Bay has done a great job at making this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer look good as new. While some imperfections abound, including a small amount of grain and dirt, overall this is a slick-looking transfer that sports crisp color patterns and dark black levels. Also available on this disc is a full-frame presentation of the movie. The audio is presented in a newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track, and both the range and fidelity of this track is impressive. The directional sounds utilized on this mix are very expansive, featuring much use of the front and rear speakers. Except for a few cases of distortion, the soundtrack is generally clear of excessive hiss. No subtitles are included on this disc. This second release of Hellraiser on DVD includes a substantial amount of extra materials. Starting off the disc is an audio commentary by writer/director Clive Barker, star Ashley Laurence, and moderator/writer Pete Atkins. This is a very jovial track with all the participants indulging in stories about the production and the story. "Resurrection" is a retrospective featurette that includes more interviews with the cast and crew discussing Hellraiser's production, as well as its place in modern horror history. Finally, there is a still gallery featuring a fair amount of pictures, as well as a theatrical trailer for the film. Those looking for a gory good time will be apt to pick up this superior DVD edition of Hellraiser.
