Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
This ain't your father's Hercules. As played with casual charm by Kevin Sorbo, the half-man, half-god who started the biggest Greek craze since Animal House is more Everydude than Man of Steel. Which isn't to say our all-hunk hero doesn't kick serious butt. During the course of this mega-set's 5 TV movies and 13 syndicated episodes, Hercules battles an entire pantheon of Hellenic monsters from the Cyclops to minotaurs, along with a few you won't find in Bullfinch's Mythology. Throughout his adventures, he's hounded by the goddess Hera, who wants to destroy this bastard son of her philandering hubby, Zeus. Along the way, he locks horns with several female fighters, including the soon-to-be-spun-off Xena. (It's fun watching Lucy Lawless forge her Warrior Princess character from its inception in a pre-Xena movie role as an Amazon.) Sorbo's sly wit makes him a great tour guide to the faux-ancient world on the DVD, where he deconstructs "Eye of the Beholder," a classic episode in which the demigod's greatest trial is evading 50 royal babes in hot pursuit of his DNA. But while Sorbo's clearly in on the show's postmodern pop humor, the special effects are no joke. Inspired by the classic stop-action creatures of Ray Harryhausen, hydra-headed snakes, giant flesh-eating birds, and assorted other fantastic beasts come to life so convincingly they almost give computer-generated effects a good name.

This show had the best producers, action professional directors, wardrobe and casting directors that I've seen, not to mention great actors! The technology was superb, with great special effects.
