Hit And Runway

Hit And Runway

Director: Christopher Livingston Cast: Michael Parducci, Peter Jacobson, Judy Prescott

DVD (Letterbox / Stereo)

The commentary track on the DVD of Hit and Runway is nearly as funny as the movie as writer/director Christopher Livingston and writer Jaffe Cohen remarks on the making of the movie. It's good to hear them chat, because all the while you are watching the movie about a straight-gay screenwriting team you're wondering how much of it was based on reality. There are long stretches during which they don't say much, which is a problem because the film's dialogue can't be heard when the "Commentary" button is pushed, so when they say, "This is my favorite line," you'd better be a lip-reader. The digital transfer makes the most of the low-budget lighting and filmstock, but it's rough-hewn appearance doesn't distract.

The plot centers on the attempts of two young writers to create screenplays that will be bought by a Hollywood producer. Along the line, there are pleasant side trips into Italian family life, gay-straight relations, and life in the City. Michael Parducci was appealing as the male lead: he looked right, seemed involved, and demonstrated that he can perform well. Peter Jacobson had the unenviable task of playing a role that was obviously written with Woody Allen in mind. Jacobson did well, but the lines really needed Allen's high-pitched whine for impact. The editing seemed "jumpy" in several spots. The R rating makes little sense; PG would even be stretching it.
