The first of two wonderful comedies that starred Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson. He is a recently widowed surgeon, and she is a recent divorcee; they meet in a hospital where she is a patient. Richard Benjamin is Matthau's droll colleague, and Art Carney is the dottering, hilarious Chief of Medicine. Candice Azzara is the "dumb blonde" who really is not so dumb, and Henry Mancini contributes a lovely score. The middle-age dating game never has looked so funny, or, in some ways, so sad. Adding to the comic mix is the fact that Jackson loudly decries modern medicine, while slowly falling in love with Matthau. Art Carney makes one realize how empty are the titles given to Doctors. His eulogy at a friend's funeral leaves the attendees speechless and the viewer laughing hard. Eventually there is no doubt that Jackson and Matthau will end up together, still, what fun watching them finally realize that. The one drawback is the lack of notes. "Hopscotch" is the other great Matthau-Jackson comedy, and film historian Bruce Eder's notes accompanying that DVD add immeasurably to the enjoyment. Doubtlessly "House Calls" deserves similar treatment. That said, see this DVD!!
