Overview

This double-disc DVD set marks the most ambitious re-release of the 1950s British series The Invisible Man (also known as H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man) in the United States since it last aired in syndication in the early '60s. The program has been reissued twice on DVD in England, once in three single-disc volumes by a company that apparently went out of business before issuing the last disc in the series, and more recently in a comprehensive set. The series was extremely well-produced for its time, with generally fine acting and very impressive special effects for the era, and it was good enough to get aired in prime-time in America on the CBS network, at a time when not many British series got anywhere near network schedules. The Dark Sky DVD set generally looks and sounds better than the U.K. complete series set released in early 2005, with a better transfer and fewer problems, at least on this reviewer's playback, other than some momentary drops in volume in certain episodes, but those are minor annoyances. The first episode is very nicely done, filled with great special effects throughout and carefully balancing the components of an espionage and human interest story. Not every script is quite as good as that, but as the series was a production of Ralph Smart, a good suspense filmmaker who went on to produce Secret Agent, starring Patrick McGoohan, it maintains a level of quality superior to most of its competition. The 13 episodes each get a single chapter marker, and are accessible individually or as part of a "play all" option in a simple dual-layer menu on each disc. The British package had more factual information than this release does, but the American licensee may correct that problem on the second volume.
