When Iron Maiden first burst onto the British music scene in the late 1970s, they were part of the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal," a movement of young bands bringing a fresh energy and ferocity to hard rock. But in the 21st Century, Iron Maiden are still on the road; they've grown from young upstarts to one of the most popular, enduring and respected bands in metal, playing around the world to sold-out crowds comprised of new listeners as well as longtime fans. In 2008, Iron Maiden set out on an international tour that saw them playing 23 shows in 45 days, traveling 40,000 miles in their private Boeing 757, with lead singer Bruce Dickenson doing double duty as pilot as they played to crowds from California to India. Filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, who directed the documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, were invited to join Iron Maiden for their global tour, and Iron Maiden: Flight 666 offers a behind-the-scenes look at life on the road with this iconic metal band along with plenty of highlights from their explosive live show. Iron Maiden: Flight 666 was an official selection at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival.

The crew doing the documentary did a great job. I think even if you were not that into Iron Maiden's music you will find this interesting. It's not every day that the front man for a heavy metal band (or any other band for that matter) is also a pilot that flies jumbo jets; which apparently is why the band was able to do so many shows in so many cities in such a short time. If you like their music, the performances of the songs is about the best I've ever seen. Bruce Dickson's voice sounds better than when I saw them in the late 80's. You can choose to watch the whole documentary or just the concert. Either way, the band is pretty engaging, interesting and who doesn't like a nice blue collar British accent?

This DVD set chronicles the Somewhere Back in Time Tour that Maiden embarked on a few years ago. Scot McFadyen is the host and travels along with the band as they fly all around the globe, Bruce flies the plane dubbed Ed Force One Flight 666; for one-night stands in several countries. We get many clips of the band in concert and learn what it was like to travel in this way. We also meet many wonderful Maiden fans from the world over and learn the true meaning that music IS the universal language. Fans in other countries sing along in English! Disc two shows the concert appearances and show what a hard working band Iron Maiden is and how much fun the members have when they're playing onstage. If you're a Maiden fan as am I, get this 2 disc set and rock on! Highly recommended.
