I'm not one of those who saw this first time 'round. Instead, I witnessed it recently on one of those late-night CABLE TV extravaganzas showing everything from NFL Great Hits to Life with Bono. Somewhere within that whole mess, this came along and hooked me. It's a very light approach to the old tale about a teen-aged girl disguising herself as a guy with the perfunctory romantic twist on the story. This time it was to demonstrate that pretty girls can write legitimate journalism, too [remember- stretch]. Other than the ole switcheroo, this is typical harmless teen-ploitation: there's really not much to the plot, there's lots of running around and the heroes and villains can be determined without a color code. Unfortunately, the dialogue is marginally one step above grunting, cooing and murmuring while the direction is at best rambling. The acting isn't too stellar either! Wow, with all these poor elements to recommend it, why even waste your time? Well, there's still at least one very good reason to see this film: the unexpected magnetism of Joyce Hyser! She delivers her lines tentatively and really doesn't appear to know very much about acting, but it doesn't matter. As the film unfolds, I couldn't take my eyes off her. No matter what outfit she was wearing or which sex she was portraying, she was simply, fetchingly adorable - especially in one of the surprising final scenes! The compelling question, I guess, is how anyone in real life could have actually mistaken her for a boy. Watch this to remind yourself of the '80s [dripping with big hair, synthesizer music and Flash Dance outfits], to take life (and this movie) with a pause- but mostly to see Joyce!
