The engrossing History Channel documentary Last Stand of the 300: The Legendary Battle at Thermopylae offers an unofficial counterpoint to the Hollywood blockbuster 300, starring Gerard Butler and Lena Headey. This documentary, like the feature, explores the legendary events that transpired in the year 480 B.C., when a legion of Greek city-states took on the forces of the Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae, defending itself successfully despite an overwhelming disadvantage in terms of battalion size. This nonfiction work recounts the tactical strategies that accounted for the Greeks' lengthy holdout, and utilizes both digital animation and dramatic reenactments to relay the thrilling story.

I rented this title to show in my World History class instead of the movie 300. My students were hesitant at first, but they loved the documentary and commented it over and over. Great historical piece, amazing visuals... overall awesome!

Many of the students had seen the fictional film, so this kept their interest. i would still like to know more about battle techniques. But good for high school classes.

This is an excellent introduction to the complex history which led to the Persian invasion of the Greek mainland in 480 BCE and the strategic reasons for attempting to block it at Thermopylae and Artemision. That and the equal attention paid to the unique character of Spartan culture give the story of Leonidas and the 300 who chose to stand and die in the pass a clarity and logic to match its heroism. And make Simonides' epitaph ring like never before: Go tell them in distant Sparta, passerby, that obedient to their command we here lie!

Forget the Rhinocerous and over-sized elephants (what were they thinking?), this special shows that there is no need to dramatize or inflate events that are in themselves larger than life.

I wouldnt even give this movie a star. I am so sick of ppl. saying it goes back into history and the movie is so great.. it is awful...the graphics are fake and chessy its hard to believe the great plot behind the movie. I rather learn about Spartans by watching the HIstory channel than this movie. it is disapointment..& definately not a family oriented movie... it was a huge disap.
