Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
"Life on a farm is kind of tough...leastways, when I finish a day's work, I feel proud." Michael Landon wrote and directed this two-part gem from Little House on the Prairie's fifth season, which completes the story arc begun in the series opener, "As Long as We're Together." Life in the city is too much for the Ingalls, Oleson, and Garvey families, who miss the simpler life. But their return to Walnut Grove is bittersweet. The town, ravaged by the elements and hard times, is in desperate need of rebuilding, and its venerable founder has lost the will to live. But Little House is all about community, and in the spirit-lifting finale, the townspeople rally to reclaim Walnut Grove. One of the series' best episodes features guest star Ray Bolger (the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz) as an unfortunate city character who wins the lottery but is swindled out of his $5,000 prize by the unrepentantly mean Mr. Standish. Another benchmark moment: Alfred, the orphaned scamp, joins the Ingalls family.
