Synapse Films has rescued a long forgotten Australian horror classic from oblivion with their impressive edition of Long Weekend
. Their video transfer deserves the acclaim it has won from genre fans as one of the best DVD restorations of 2005: the carefully remastered, anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 image on this disc is gorgeous, offering up the island vistas of Vincent Monton's cinematography with precise detail and lush colors. Synapse also went the extra mile with the audio portion of the disc, remastering the original mono track and also including a 5.1 Dolby Digital stereo remix that makes excellent use of its sound effects. On the extras forefront, there is a commentary track featuring Monton and producer Richard Brennan
that lays out plenty of details about the making of the film and an audio interview with actor John Hargreaves
that plays over a montage of production stills. There is also an insert in the DVD case that sports some informative liner notes. In short, Synapse's edition of Long Weekend
does a fine job of presenting this film to DVD audiences and does them the added favor of putting it in the proper context.
