Madonna -- dance-floor icon, cultural phenomenon, mother of two -- once again changed personae and shifted focus for the Drowned World tour. Her oft-erotic stage moves merge with electronica beats (courtesy of collaborators William Orbit and French DJ Mirwais Ahmadzai) for a truly memorable set, most of which comes from the Music and Ray of Light albums. Filmed in Auburn Hills, Michigan on August 26, 2001, she has never been better. A bizarre moment occurs early on when Madonna straps on a guitar and noodles on the end of "Candy Perfume Girl," but otherwise she keeps things predominantly kinetic. The tracks are as follows, with the original albums in parentheses:
  • Drowned World/Substitute for Love (Ray of Light)
  • Impressive Instant (Music)
  • Candy Perfume Girl (Ray of Light)
  • Beautiful Stranger (from the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack)
  • Ray of Light (Ray of Light)
  • Paradise (But Not for Me) (Music)
  • Frozen (Ray of Light)
  • Open Your Heart (True Blue)
  • Swell
  • Nobody's Perfect (Music)
  • Mer Girl Part I (Ray of Light)
  • Sky Fits Heaven (Ray of Light)

Loved the music, did not like this concert. It was flat, a bit boring and not at all up to her other concerts. "Confessions on a dancefloor" is much better. Skip this one!

Madonna is incredible on this tour. Not only are the vocals amazing but it is just as enjoyable to watch. Her charisma and dedication to her fans makes this performance so personal and touching. Leaving her past in the past and bringing a new perspective to her later music will leave anyone open to her awesome none stop hits! I look forward to the new album this fall. We love you Madonna!

Inspired by ancient Kabbalah symbology (note the Tree of Life/DWT logo design) and the futuristic novel ''The Drowned World'' by J.G. Ballard, Madonna's own Drowned World is filled with Rowdy Punks from London's King's Road, Surrealistic Geishas from Kioto, line dancing Urban Cowgirls, Romantic Flamenco dancers and Ghettofabulous Party Pimps. The show is a four-part journey told backwards where the leading charactor finds Truth at the end of each act. Conceptually, each mesmerizing world cannot exist without the other. And so we begin the journey through darkness and destruction, finding our way through an apocaliptic Asian landscape, kicking our spurs up with randy Cowgirls and Bullriders, and finally emerging into the light of celebration and good times. This is actually one of the most amazing stage performances in the history of live music. Aside from the landmark special effects, powerhouse choreography, and avant garde content, Madonna has never sounded better live! However, many people could not understand the complexity and artistry of this show. Truly, The Drowned World Tour is filled with many shocking and not-so-beautiful metaphors of life, and more specifically, Madonna's own bittersweet fame. Madonna also refrains from regurtating the same old stable of hits... Like a Virgin and Vogue were mere frivolity for our spiritually-reinvented Ethereal Girl. There are bigger ideas worth exploring on this tour, and besides, why repeat the obvious and expected when you have amazing unheard material to perform live for the first time. For instance, who knew Madonna was such an aggro hellraiser on electric guitar. Again, a new Madonna emerges... a punk rocker owning the stage with balls-to-the-wall gusto. Overall, a dramatic theatrical concept piece more than a rock concert! Experience it with an open mind and be blown away... go into it with expectations and you may just find yourself at the video store revisiting Blond Ambition!
