Mamma Mia!

Longing to discover the identity of her true father before she exchanges her wedding vows, the daughter of a once-rebellious single mother secretly invites a trio of paternal candidates to her upcoming wedding in this feature adaptation of the beloved stage musical. Independent-minded single mother Donna (Meryl Streep) has always done her best to raise her spirited daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), while simultaneously running a successful hotel on a small Greek island, but now the time has come for this hardworking mom to finally let go. In just a few days, Sophie will be married, and Donna will stand by bittersweetly as her little girl takes flight. Of course, Donna's lifelong friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) will both be present at the wedding, but unbeknownst to the mother, Sophie has furtively invited three very special guests of her own. When Sophie walks down the aisle on that fateful day, she wants her father to hand her off. The only problem is that Donna has never revealed the true identity of Sophie's father, leaving the resourceful future bride to narrow the list down to three potential candidates. Now, as three key figures from Donna's past return to the picturesque Mediterranean shores they all walked 20 years prior, one beautiful bride will discover the secret of her past while one lonely mother finds out that it's never too late for a little romance. Phyllida Lloyd, director of both the original London sensation as well as the hit Broadway incarnation, makes her feature directorial debut with this big-screen version of the beloved musical featuring 22 classic ABBA hits. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Dominic Cooper co-star.

I'm only 25 years old, and most of the people my age couldn't sing the words to "Dancing Queen" if you paid them, but I've been an ABBA fan since the age of four. I cannot believe how well the script and characters were built around these songs! It's like the songs and the rest were all written at the same time! I was blown away the first time I saw it on stage, and was a little skeptical when going to see it in the movie theater, but I ended up seeing it twice because it was so good! Meryl Streep is amazing! I had no idea she could sing, but she can sing WELL!! Also, the actresses for Sophie, Tonya, and Rosie were fantastic and really did well with the ABBA music. The three possible fathers were not so great with the singing...but in their defense, they really wouldn't be. Donna and her friends had a singing group years ago, and Sophie got her singing voice from her mom, but the three men have practical jobs and probably no singing experience. I also loved the fact that they made "Lay all your love on me" into a duet. I always thought there was something missing from that song... All in all, a wonderful film. It speaks volumes about the mother/daughter relationship and really touched me. Especially during the holidays, everyone should "take a chance" and watch this show! "My! My! How can you resist it?"

I absolutely cannot stop watching this movie. I have given this DVD to my friends who as well share the enthusiasm I have. I loved how the music was incorporated into a love story, comedy and marvelous scenery! I want it all! It is hilarious, lively, and colorful. The actors are superb but maybe not the best singers but their rawness is all the better for this movie. Each character was casted perfectly for their part. The scenery was realistic even if it was a sound stage. LOVED IT! and ABBA music is timeless! Excellent actors, set in Greek Islands with ABBA music, what's not to like??

This movie is an absolute joy. This is an empowering movie for women of every age. It shows the power of friendship, and love. Turn on the movie, crank up the volume, sing along, and escape to Greece. You'll be glad you did.

Mama Mia is a quirky and elevating movie that partially centers around a strong bond that a woman named Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) has with her mother Donna (Meryl Streep). Donna is also lending emotional support to Sophie for her upcoming marriage and simultaneously coming to terms with Sophie growing up. On the positive/plus side both women are not alone as they are coping with the changes. In addition to her fiancée Sky (Dominic Cooper), Sophie has her best friend Ali (Ashley Lilly) for support while her mom has support in the from Tanya (Christian Baranski) and Rosie (Julie Walters). Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard also play roles in Mama Mia.

I've seen reviews where its said that audiences love this musical (stage and screen) but critics hate it. Frankly, for me it gets better with each viewing (and I forgive actors trying to be professional singers...they try their hearts out and as a result, the real emotion they bring...over 'sing beautifully but without anything real in the feeling' stage worth it and adds something you typically don't get with a stage performance, or often even with straight singers.) And frankly, critics typically only approve of things set in a warzone or ethnic war where everyone dies tragically in the end, making an over the top social statement. All that does is make critics think they are special and 'critical'. What this movie offers is great acting, a great cast, wonderfully fun musical numbers especially with the 'hens' and 'stags'...and a great location where one can believe god and goddess interventions really do happen. And the plot is based, by the way, off of a WWII Sophia Loren movie...a comedy, but with serious undertones about unwed motherhood...and the daughter didn't get married in that one either, in the end. :) Cheers All! Just have a glass of wine and enjoy this for what it is...a great, fun movie that you can watch again and again. Worth the money therefore.

Has seen it on live performance twice, on the movie theater once and the video 3 times- I don't mind watching it again at home with a friend or family member who has not seen it.

While there is no match for the excitement of attending a live performance of Mama Mia on Broadway, this DVD is an excellent version for in-home viewing. Meryl Streep does a fabulous job of singing & dancing the role of Donna as only this actress extraordinaire can do. And while Pierce Brosnan isn't much of a singer, he is gorgeous to look at. The clever plot is a perfect vehicle to showcase the wonderful ABBA music. And the Greek tourist bureau could easily use the scenes from this film to lure visitors to their lovely islands. Great supporting cast & "joyous celebration"...Mama Mia is a winner!!

Musicals require that you suspend reality. It just isn¿t real to expect everyone can sing. Not everyone can sing, even in musicals. Marni Nixon was dubbed over both Natalie Woods for West Side Story and for Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady. Meryl Streep, however, needs no dubbing. The only criticism I have for Streep is: where have you been! Previously, we have only had a movie ending ¿Amazing Grace¿ as we watched the tragic end of Silkwood. There was a tour de force ending to Postcards from the Edge with ¿I¿m Checking Out¿. It wasn¿t until Prairie Home Companion with a number of songs that you have to ask why it took Meryl until her late 50¿s for us to hear her great voice.
All of the adult members of the cast are about a decade too old chronologically, but their acting makes up for that. Colin Firth is closest to the right age and can sing quite well. His ¿Our Last Summer¿ will awaken youthful memories. Pierce Brosnan is the weakest link for solo singing (¿When All is said and Done¿), yet is quite decent in a duet with Meryl Streep. (¿SOS¿). There are big production numbers. ¿Dancing Queen¿ which builds from Christine Baranski and Julie Walters (both more than adequate singers) to all the women on the island ¿Lay All Your Love on Me¿ has all the eligible young men on the island tap dancing with scuba flippers! ¿Does Your Mother Know¿ has all the young men following Baranski¿s every move. ¿Voulez-Vous¿ is so well edited that watching it can make you dizzy.
Other songs that stir the heart as well as the memory are ¿I Have a Dream¿, ¿Super Trouper¿, ¿Honey, Honey¿ and ¿Slipping Through my Fingers¿. The best song/performance is Streep and ¿Winner Takes it All¿. Amanda Seyfried as Streeps daughter has an abundance of energy, eyes you want to get lost in and has a remarkable sense of family that is originated from reading her mothers diary.
What is so exciting about ¿Mamma Mia¿ is how it became a musical. Musical start with a story. After it is written or adapted from a movie or a book, a song writer and lyricist are brought in to build around the story line. ¿Mamma Mia¿ is unique because the songs already existed and a story was written around the songs. I went to see ¿Mamma Mia¿ 4 times and will view a DVD many more times.
