Marilyn Monroe: the Diamond Collection, Vol. 1
This splendid DVD box set from CBS/Fox Video will delight Marilyn Monroe fans as much as Hollywood historians. The set includes five of Monroe's most famous movies and an extra DVD featuring a documentary entitled "Marilyn Monroe: The Final Days," as well as a rough cut of her last, never-completed project. The five films that make up the package are Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, There's No Business Like Show Business, How to Marry a Millionaire, and Bus Stop. All of these films have been returned to their original theatrical aspect ratios and were remastered in the anamorphic process. The original mono soundtracks have been spruced up in Dolby Digital 5.1 and the sounds of the film are as rich and full as the remastered Technicolor images. The bonanza of extras includes the new documentary that follows the ill-fated shooting of the never-completed "Something's Gotta Give" and ends with Monroe's overdose. In a really special coup, 45 minutes of never-before-seen footage from the movie have been edited together and are added to the DVD. The footage looks great even if the movie seems like it was shaping up to be nothing more than an ill-advised remake of the superior My Favorite Wife. Regardless, this is an exceptional DVD box set.
