This series was a great, charming show when it first started. The lead actor was good, and of course Richard Briers and Susan Hampshire were perfect as the laird and lady of this Scottish family. It was by no means perfect with a plot that could go all over the place but the characters were likeable, sometimes loveable, and you can't beat the scenery of Scotland. The problem though started with the main character, Archie's relationships. He's with one girl, really likes another, then gets married to a third girl seemingly out of nowhere. It made no sense. But I could get over that.. Then the departure of Richard Briers lowered the show a bit. But he still seemed at least partially there since the remaining characters remembered him. I could deal with that.. The nail in the proverbial coffin though was the departure of Alastair Mackenzie "Archie" with one of those cheap badly written plot ideas. He goes on a trip... that lasts forever. And then they bring in Lloyd Owen as the new lead guy, and he wasn't bad... but it wasn't Monarch of the Glen anymore. They should have ended the series with the lead characters departure. But for the first 3 seasons it was brilliant. 4 and 5 not so bad... and as for the rest... well there's worse on TV. Just prepare for disappointment. Oh and also enjoy a lovely turn by wonderful writer Julian Fellowes as a competing neighbor.
