In the first 15 minutes there's an execution, a suicide and a kid gets hit by a car. With a lesser script and lesser actors it would be easy for this film to collapse under it's own weight. However Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry are able to carry it off without it becoming maudlin. Great performances and a great script.

The power of human feeling and the capacity of people to grow in unexpected ways is beautifully written, directed and acted in this excellent movie. Halle Berry (a well deserved Academy Award), Billy Bob Thornton, Peter Boyle- actually every actor in the film is superb. Highly recommended.

The first thing that I realized so great about this movie is that there were so many internal and external conflicts within each character and these conflicts co-exsisted in some way with all the other actors. For example, in the begining the movie portrayed the father and the son as total opposites. Later the viewer notices that they were so much alike, with unprejeduced issues, with seclusion, and etc. The film work, the directing, especially the actors were brilliant. The credits in the beggining were also put into perspective as a dream like state. The ending was also well thought of and could not have ended better. A movie to watch over and over again due to the passion of wanting to know what will happen next, like life.

Magnificent acting, a challenging script, and superb direction are what you can expect from this top quality film. Very few movies today are brave enough to take on the issues explored in the film, racism, the death penalty, interracial romance just to name three. The love scenes are very tastefully done, when Billy Bob is tenderly embracing and making love to Halle you feel emotionally involved, this is by no means a lewd or perverse film, even the erotic elements are integral to the entire work and an indispensible part of it. Halle Berry indeed merited the Oscar award not because her backside is displayed but because her performance was so devastating and real. Halle seemed to channel all the inner demons which have plagued her in real life and pour them into this character, the vulnerability, the frustration, and the anguish of rejection which she has experienced for years were there for all to see on the screen.

Good performance, but Oscar worthy? C'mon really now....

Knowing Billy Bob Thorton was in this film, I expected it to have some credible acting and with good reviews, but I found nothing to this credence. The plot is compelling, but it doesn't develop into a story. The acting is good in the beginning, but it doesn't become a performance. The directing was just not there.

It really is amazing how anyone could consider this movie good...let alone good enough to earn an Oscar. Dark and depressing, low budget... it's really is just a horrible movie that should never have been nominated. Halle Berry should count her lucky stars everyday that the senile members of the Academy gave her the Oscar for such a mediocre performance.

Monster's Ball is a movie about change. Anyone can enjoy this movie over the age of 15. The direction is excellent and the acting is intense. I was even surprised to see that Mo Def and Sean Combs did excellent jobs. The movie isn't slow, but it isn't face paced either.

the movie was beyond recognition and masterfully required enormous amounts of attention to enjoy the movie you must become the movie AND its characters the acting from mrs. barry is uncomproble expect nothing less from the academy recognized women and billy bob plays innocent and evil all at the same time its simple SEE THE MOVIE the sex scenes were raw and completely neccesary contrary to what others say

Okay I'm a Halle Berry fan but what the hell was this movie. It wasn't at all what I expected, there was way too much hype for this movie, the acting was alright it wasn't the best I've seen. This movie just could have been better

Not Halle's best work, she did a fine job with what she had. Thornton did a fair job, but the character seemed flat. Script did not allow the actors to add dimension to their characters. If the characters had been allowed to grow and we were privy to some the internal struggles, this would have been a great movie. All in all it was not award winning performance.

The movie is full of subjects most of us don't care to talk about. But the realism of the characters potrayed by Halle Berry&Billy Bob Thorton, makes you sit up and pay attention through out the film. All of the actors in the film did an impressive job, even Sean P.Diddy Combs!!

Considering the budget, the actors did a superb job..even the end kept you in suspense.. It was on the same lines as American Beauty..''about nothing'' but definitely worth watching..and keeping your interest..

A dark, dull movie dealing with subjects that most of us would prefer to avoid. The movie opens with an execution, a suicide and a child killed by a hit-and-run driver. After this, the movie loses its sense of direction and wanders aimlessly trying to connect the three events into some meaningful story. It never accomplishes this and turns into a boring, dull affair. Don't waste your time or money! I also don't understand why Halle Berry won the Best Actress Oscar for this performance. Considering the script, she perhaps did an adequate job, but nothing that would be deserving of an Academy Award. It's no wonder the movie did so poorly at the box office...moviegoers know a flop when they see one.

Don't listen to the armchair critics. This film is one the absolute best films to come along in many years. The masses hate Halle and turned purple with disgust because she was rightfully chosen as the best actress of the year (the Academy finally got it right). The acting was superb from a perfectly-picked cast! One often gets lost in a film with complex characters and a story line, but this is a classic. It's great to see what a small, independent producer like Lee Daniels can bring to life. Monster's Ball is a film I thought I would not like, but it is one of my favorites!

This movie was absolutley HORRIBLE!! I kept telling myself that it would get better but boy was i wrong it only got worse. The acting was bad, and the plot of the movie was as well. I can't believe Halle Berry took an oscar for this garbage movie.

i was extremely disappointed by monster balls. i feel that the filmmakers were misleading the audience into expecting something completely different, something with more beasts or evil creatures and with more eroticism. monster balls, however, only had one truly engaging scene about halfway through between halle berry and billy bob thornton, even though there were no monsters and no...you know...to be found. a let-down.
