My Neighbor Totoro

This superbly animated children's tale is directed by Hayao Miyazaki, one of Japan's most beloved animators. The story follows Satsuke and Mei, two young girls who find that their new country home is in a mystical forest inhabited by a menagerie of mystical creatures called Totoros. They befriend O Totoro, the biggest and eldest Totoro, who is also the king of the forest. As their girls' mother lies sick in the hospital, O Totoro brings the sisters on a magical adventure but also helps them to understand the realities of life. Like most films released by Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli, this family-oriented feature has a powerful ecological theme. The English-language version of this film wasn't dubbed until many years later, explaining the presence of actors such as Dakota Fanning in the cast (who wasn't even born until 1994).

My Neighbor Totoro is the best children's movie I have ever seen. It is brilliant, refreshing and wildly creative with strong female characters. Unlike most American children's movies, there is no violence. That being said, the original movie is far better than the newly released Disney version in which Disney redubs the film and changes many of the lines that the characters say. Comparing the original to the new one, it is inconceivable (and arrogant) why they changed a thing since there was nothing wrong with the film to begin with. Now, we're left to suffer with Disney's terrible "improvements" and are left to search for the old version and make bootleg copies of it to distribute to our friends so they too can enjoy the best children's movie ever the way it was intended to be seen by American audiences.

My Neighbor Totoro is most certainly an excellent movie, but only if you look past the fact that Disney slaughtered the movie because of the new voice acting.Having grown up on this movie I was shocked to see the DVD version. My advice is that you should seek out the original VHS version by FOX.

Although I haven't seen the entire film, of the clips I have seen were disappointing regarding the dubbing. Unlike Spirited Away, where the dubbing worked, the charm is lost in this one. Why can't they provide the full original version with captions? Are we all really too lazy to read the subtitles?

This is by far the worst movie i have ever seen. The original movie was a hundred times better than this crap. They ruined the voices and songs for this movie. I don't get why they had to change the voices. Disney you've screwed up a very good movie. Lets see how many more you screw up. If I could i'd rate this with no stars so sadly i have to put at least one 1 which you don't even deserve.

From acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki "My Neighbor Totoro" with key characters Satsuki and Mei is a delightful fantasy. This is great family entertainment. The storyline is engaging and the characters are endearing, along with magical music. Creatures that only the "young-at-heart" and young in age can see are assisting to make a difficult situation easier to deal with. Some of the creatures may make you think of giant huggable hamsters. *Great detail in the animation makes this DVD a wonderful choice for family movie time.

This is film is beautiful and sweet. As always the U.S. voice acting is horrible but the movie is not ruined by even that.

This is a fabulous film for the whole family. We can't get enough of it in our house. There is magic, adventure, and emotion in this film, shown in a way that is accessible to kids. Buy it!

My Neighbor Totoro is one of my favorite movies, of any genre, of all time. Myself, my husband, and my two oldest kids (the youngest is still an infant), watch it every coupe of Months. It is a true kids' movie - meaning for kids, or the young kid still in all of us. It does not talk down to kids. It shows the world as we all have seen it, from a four or five year old point of view; where nature and fantasy and our family and strangers all blend together. Things are mysterious and make perfect sense in a magical / logical way. The creatures are big and toothy and powerful, but not scary. There are no big scary scenes or characters to inspire awe, just incredible landscapes and wonderous creatures. The sounds are one of my favorite parts; bugs chirping in the heat of mid day, flutes being played atop a huge tree, a frog in the road. Miyazaki lingers on these sounds and also on moments in nature, like leaves in a stream and rain drops on roofs. A great movie to watch when you want to feel like a five year old with bare feet and the ability to see magical creatures. The story is touching and the characters very real.

I have enjoyed this movie since I was very young, but was disappointed to find that Disney decided to re-dub the movie with such famous stars as Dakota Fanning, who proves to be an extremely annoying voice to tolerate for an entire feature length film. I think I was even more disappointed when I bought this product, which clearly lists the original dub cast on this very page, and received the newest dub.

Wow,where to start on this one? Okay, well of course we're all really grateful to the Mouse Machine for giving us the improved production (wide screen and dual language) of a film so many of us love to the very core of our being and we'll definitely buy a copy or two, but then we watch their new dub and realize they still don't quite get it. Even with Miyazaki's tight contractual stipulations we can still wind up with bad english voice cast and skewed americanization of the script. Note to Mouse: It's a Miyazaki film. You don't need a recognizable "Hollywood name" in the cast to sell it. And just because someone is a talented SCREEN actor doesn't necessarily make him or her a good VOICE actor (match the mouth flaps anyone?). Track down a copy of the original Fox english release and watch how much better it was with a cast that was more vocally and energetically matched to the Japanese language version. And while you're watching, pay attention to the dialog. Notice how the Fox script more closely matches the Japanese translation? Regardless, this is a GREAT movie for ALL ages. It is charming beyond measure and infinitely re-watchable. It's a wonderful gift movie for the toddler thru grade-school age group - adorable characters, realistic children, beautiful animation and a sweet story. Parental cautionary note: the story does involve a hospitalized parent (the mother). Though she does get better and come home (as seen in the ending credits) this might be a difficult theme for a child in this situation or one who has actually lost a parent.

I first saw this movie when I was three, and I loved it right from the start. I am now seventeen, and I can still watch the movie and love every part of it. I've grown up with this movie, and it holds such a beautiful timeless story that I'll always enjoy. I highly recommend this movie for all to see.

I just wanted to say that this isn't a Chinese animation. It is Japanese. Although I am Korean, my family is into Japanese animation and my father got hold of a real authentic Totoro video tape from Japan and I watched it and enjoyed it so much. It is definately a lot better to have the original copy with just the subtitles. And also because the animation is more pure that way.
