Mystery Science Theater 3000: Mitchell

From the creative minds at Best Brains comes another instalment of the cult classic feature-length television program Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K). This DVD includes the episode "Mitchell, which originally aired October 23, 1993, on the Comedy Central cable network. This episode also marks the final appearance of the show's co-creator and co-host Joel Hodgson. In addition to the 91-minute show, this DVD also includes the original 62-second movie trailer for the "feature presentation." The animated menu screen is straightforward and allows easy navigation and access not only to said trailer, but the 20-chapter indexes as well. After five-and-a-half seasons at the creative helm of MST3K, Hodgson left the show on a decidedly up note -- owing in part to the fact that the film Mitchell practically mocks itself. Joe Don Baker stars in this low-budget "action" flick as Mitchell -- a Southern California police detective who uses his gut (literally) to solve crimes, some of which involve his own department. The film also stars Martin Balsam and John Saxon with cameo appearances by Merlin Olsen and Linda Evans. The premise of each episode of MST3K revolves around Hodgson and his robotic pals Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo being monitored by two evil scientists. In order to gain total control of their subject, they launched him into the void of outer space. His mind is then monitored as he is subjected to week after week of bad movies. However, Hodgson dismantled much of the gear on-board his rocket (aka The Satellite of Love) to create his companions. One big reason why MST3K works on so many levels is the concept that one can say and do things using a robot that a human might not be able to get away with. This episode succeeds in capturing the essence of what makes MST3K so endearing. The image and audio transfer is flawless. Due to the nature of the program, there is little in the way of extras. There are no widescreen or anamorphic versions and likewise there are no alternate audio tracks either. This mirrors the way in which the episode was initially aired and does not detract from the inherent value of the DVD whatsoever. For those inclined, "Mitchell" is among the best from the Joel Hodgson years on MST3K.

This has to be one of the funniest MST3K movies ever created. Basically, this is a cop movie gone wrong with Linda Evans as a hooker, Joe Don Baker as an sloppy, unliked cop who gets berated by the MST3K boys. This movie has it all, including a sex scene involving a six pack of Schlitz, a high-speed car chase and Merlin Olsen (FTD man) as a mob croney. You won't be sorry for getting this movie...I can't wait for it to come out on DVD. It includes the original movie which has a dune buggy scene in it!!!
