Among the Rhino releases, this is the one I've recommended to newcomers. Puma Man, Riding with Death and Time Chasers are my three favorite episodes, but only Time Chasers has had official release. This collection isn't really representative of the series, but some friends found episodes with movies before the late 60s to be inaccessibly dull. Host references to Cold War paranoia and cultural hegemony aren't everyone's cup of tea. I suspect that the more recent the bad movie featured, the sillier it looks, because we assume contemporary filmmakers should know better. Two of these are from the 90s, one from the 80s, and one from the 70s. All four movies have just enough plot to poke holes through, and all feature not only terrible scripts but also non-professional actors (except for Borgnine). They'd all be funny without any commentary. Once people get a sense of the show's format with this collection, they tend to be more open to the older features like Manos and Girlstown, and the industrial and social guidance shorts like "A Date with Your Family", "Progress Island USA" and "Why Study Industrial Arts?" On the other hand, anyone who watches Time Chasers and is unmoved can be confident that the rest of the series probably isn't for them. - Mark Skipton, Chicago IL

I don't very much care for the new characters and opening song, but the gags and stories between the characters are only half the beauty of that which is MST3K. The robots and Mike just seem to get more cynical as the show goes on, which adds for even more smartass comments during the feature presentation. It will never fail to make you burst out laughing.

I really love to watch Mystery Science Theatre. The show is hilarious it is fun to watch the old movies and "B" movies. My family laughs throughout the whole movie!

This DVD is, like all the others, a great collection for any MST fan. The riffing on each episode is good and upbeat. Also, the laid-back interview with Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy is quite a find.

These MST3K collections are sometimes a hit or miss, but Vol. 5 is actually really good. My favorie film in this one is "Time Chasers", which is a fantastically awful movie about a guy, his time-travelling airplane, and the antics that ensue. Mike and the bots really nailed their jokes in the commentary for this one. Also included in this collection is "Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders", which is an accurate title in that there is a shop, and you define "mystical wonders" as stories that are creepy and ridiculous at the same time. Mike and the bots' commentary for "The Touch of Satan" is also really good, even if the movie itself isn't - at all. And "Boggy Creek II"... There's not much I can say for this one that Mike doesn't say in the introduction. Anyway, this collection is a great addition to anyone's MST3K library. These films are good for long-time fans and newcomers alike!

First, let me say that "The Touch of Satan" is my favorite, followed by "Time Chasers." Being a kid of the 70's the "Satan" movie looked familiar and had lots of openings for Mike and the Bots to rip the movie apart. It works great. In "Time Chasers" a guy "the type that would never get a date in high school" develops a time machine by installing a computer in a prop plane. This loser with thick glasses, mullet hairdo, and the most prominent pointy chin I've ever seen is also the hero and "eek, barf" love interest. Keep the Pepto handy. The guy is seen without a shirt "first dose of Pepto", and kisses the pretty girl "second dose". The lame dialogue, filming places, extras "they use war re-enactors to give the impression they've gone back to the civil war", and silly plot are great for the MST3K crew!! Love the fact that this Mega-Geek can't drive a car but can fly a plane. Yeah. Sure. Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders: Two stories pieced together as one. Ernest Borgnine tells his grandson some stories, including one about Merlin and a cheesy used toy. Great segment! Boggy Creek II is my least favorite, not because of the MST3K crew but due to my dislike of cheap movies filmed in the south. Charles Pierce "the, uh, "scientist"" practically narrates the entire movie with unending, pretentious speeches about the scenery and the creature. Pretty females have their predictable roles as brainless twits. Everyone has commented about how repulsive the big guy was but that was only for a short time in the film. I gagged often when the star's dweeby, pasty and obviously under-developed son kept prancing around shirtless. That all being said, I LOVED THIS SET. I have all but two of these MST3K volumes and I haven't been disappointed yet. Maybe I prefer one movie over another, but they've grown on me.

This DVD Set inperticular, is one of the best. it has everything you can ask for in a collection. Each movie is worse than the next, and with every passing hour of time well spent watching, will result in many, many outbursts.
