Overview

Nero Wolfe (Maury Chaykin) is the world's greatest detective, and like any genius, he has his share of idiosyncrasies -- he loves orchids with an unnatural passion, he weighs a seventh of a ton, and--oh yeah--he never leaves his New York brownstone. Instead, he is aided by an army of foot soldiers headed by Archie Goodwin (Timothy Hutton). The film opens when Pete, a young windshield washer, is begged by a woman to call the police. She is then ushered into a car and whisked away. Thinking that she has been kidnapped, Pete gives Nero the scoop in exchange for half the reward money. When Pete later turns up dead, Nero kicks his investigation into high gear.

Nero Wolfe - The Complete Classic Whodunit Series 4.4 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 16 reviews.

The Nero Wolfe series was exceptionally well done from production quality to the storyline of each episode in the series. I especially enjoy the repertory casting, which can only work because the actors themselves are superb. Hutton and Chaykin play their respective roles to perfection, and Hutton's talent behind the camera is also evident. I highly recommend this series. I have played and replayed each of the episodes several times since making this purchase. The biggest disappointment is that there were no more episodes made. I would also have preferred that the DVD's did not separate so many of the two part episodes into two separate DVD titles. Regardless, A&E should bring this series back for another run, it was one of their best original series.

Loved this series when it was on tv, and am so delighted that I can see it again and again through these videos. Not only is Wolfe a stay-at-home detective, but the viewers get to do the same detecting, since we see/hear all the clues that Archie tells Wolfe about. It's a challenge to see if you can figure it out before Wolfe lays it all out for you. Genius at work on the screen and in front of the screen. The acting ensemble is excellent. Rex Stout (author of the novels) is one of the all-time best mystery writers.

Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin bring Stout's Nero Wolfe to life in this series. The acting, directing, and settings are superb, along with the ensemble of actors who, for the most part, take different roles in each episode. I especially like the episodes which include Kari Matchett. A great series. Highly recommended.

The Nero Wolfe series was one of the best productions ever offered on A&E. It is well acted and a very entertaining series. Each one is worth watching over and over again.

I absolutely recommend these DVDs. The slightly stylized effect of the repertory cast actually catches the flavor of the effect that Stout achieved by moving the stories along in time (Depression, WWII, the Fifties, Civil Rights...) while leaving the characters the same age the whole time. Timothy Hutton was born to play Archie.

This is one of the best series of all time. Nero Wolfe is a classy, elegant "whodunit" that will make anyone who likes these kind of shows fall in love with it.
