I first saw Charlie Hunnam in the movie Abandon and though he was kinda cute and reminded me so of Cillian Murphy with those dashing almost hypnotizing eyes. Anyway, I caught this movie after reading on one of my favorite authors who thought of him as a character in a very popular book and so thought of watching it myself. Though I was not only watching it for that but also for the movie itself of course. I've never heard of this book but from seeing the trailer for the movie it looked good. I watched the movie and really enjoyed it, though some scenes were a little hard to watch and others thought it wasn't necessary. This is the title character's story of helping his family after the death of one of their own and along the way comes to meet interesting people gaining allies and enemies in a world all new to them. This movie was kinda sweet and not only loved Charlie's performance "gotta love the hair" but also of Jamie Bell as Smike, he looked like the shy cute adorable one and was quite believable. A good performance by both. I recommend this movie though heard it was quite long but I still enjoyed it and is a favorite even after one viewing.

This is one of the best movies ever filmed...I have watched it 7 times in 2 days, please buy it and see what I mean! It has drama, tragedy, humor, angst, love, tenderness, everything one would expect from Dickens.

This has to be one of my FAVORITE MOVIES. I cannot begin describe how great it is. It really sticks to that period of time without trying to take any of the present to it. The old English is great, it is like the actors actually came from that time. I just loved Smike and Nicholas. If you want to be moved and watch a great movie you MUST see this. It is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!

I am big into period dramas. I love watching classic books adapted into great films. I was a little wary with this version, but any doubts I had were completely erased when I watched it. I am not usually a fan of abridgment, but the abridgment in this movie was necessary and painless. I have read the 800-page book, so I know. All of the actors are amazing. But Jamie Bell's performance of Smike was truly heart-rending. It was compelling to watch. I NEVER cry over movies but I was bawling over Smike. I cannot say enough about the character. I was simply heart broken over Smike and his plight. He reminds you of a beaten puppy. His devotion to Nicholas and their relationship is incredibly touching. I HIGHLY recommend it!!

Director Douglas McGrath has truly outdone himself! Every actor he has cast from Charlie Hunnam to Nicholas Rowe and Romola Garai are wonderful to watch. The feeling in everyones performances is what makes this film so wonderful. Also, the beautiful cotumes (designed by Ruth Meyers) and sets are lovely to look at. Nicholas Nickleby is a film well worth viewing again and again!
