This is a wonderful series, which ran to six seasons, only three of which are available here :( You should buy these from B&N, because they sell these as Region 1 DVDs which will play on your American DVD systems, as opposed to the cheaper Region 2 DVDs that Amazon flogs, which are a disappointment, the same with other French series like Spiral (Engrenages). Beware Amazon Region 2 DVDs! These CSI-type stories, from Jean-François Parot's novels Les Enquêtes de Nicolas Le Floch, commissaire au Châtelet, are really gritty and sometimes quite gruesome, but simply wonderful. They start just before the French Revolution, it is truly a trip down history lane, of how corrupt that class system was and how primitive life was. Interesting to note that in the 16th through the 18th centuries, Frenchmen led the way in Forensic science: Ambroise Paré, a French army surgeon, systematically studied the effects of violent death on internal organs. (16th century) "A Treatise on Forensic Medicine and Public Health" by the French physician Francois Immanuele Fodéré. (18th century) Alphonse Bertillon, the inventor of the mug shot, was a French police officer and biometrics researcher who applied anthropometry to law enforcement creating an identification system based on physical measurements, before fingerprints were invented. He also invented the use of galvanoplastic compounds to preserve footprints, ballistics, and the dynamometer, used to determine the degree of force used in breaking and entering. (18th century) These stories are before most of that, but the forensic inventiveness and intrepid pursuit of the truth in impossible circumstances will capture your attention with the side story of the boiling political environment and the corruptness of that dying system of operating a nation are an added plus.
