Gaston Pauls and Ricardo Garin star in director Fabian Bielinsky's Nine Queens. The film is presented in an only mediocre 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While the colors and black levels are generally solid and well saturated, there are a few spots where the image sports a softness that can be distracting to the viewing. Otherwise this is a passable transfer with accurately represented flesh tones. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in Spanish with optional English and French subtitles. The mix sports a fine array of surround sounds and directional effects without any hiss or distortion to detract from the viewing. Overall Columbia has done a fine job with this pleasing Dolby 5.1 mix. Unfortunately, the only extra features included on this disc is a theatrical trailer for the film, plus additional theatrical trailers for the films The Lady and the Duke and My Wife is an Actress.

This movie is clever, seductive, and engaging. I watched it, watched the ending again, and now I need to watch the entire movie again. The characters are marvelous and the plot slick brings to mind "The Usual Suspects" and "Shawshank Redemption."
