"No Name on the Bullet" is a superior western programmer lensed by the 50's reliable Jack Arnold ("The Incredible Shrinking Man", "Creature From the Black Lagoon") and starring B-movie perennial Audie Murphy, who in a twist on the usual good-guy typecasting plays a cold=blooded killer named John Gant. It seems that Gant has killed many times, but has never been jailed as he first provokes his prey into drawing guns first and then shoots them in "self-defense". It is the combined reaction of a sleepy western town when Gant rides in that comprises the plot and suspense of the film. Murphy is stark and oddly charming as the murderous Gant, a cold charm that throws the entire population of the town into a frenzied paranoia of who-if-anybody is Gant after. The supporting cast is full of familiar and welcome faces as Warren Stevens, Whit Bissell and Charles Drake. Performance and solid direction aside, it is tha solid script that raises this oater to the level of "must-see". Lost in the shuffle of 50's classics like "High Noon" and "The Searchers" , "No Name on the Bullet" is every bit the equal of that decades more acclaimed series of "psychological westerns" by Anthony Mann/James Stewart.
