The North Shore may not have been nominated for any academy awards, but it is still one of the best movies of the 80's. In the grand tradition of ''Rad'' and ''Gleaming the Cube'', it is just a movie about a kid who is looking to do something great with his life. Some of the dialogue is incredibly cheesy, but the movie as a whole is excellent. I guaruntee you will fall in love with Turtle (possibly one of the best characters from an 80's film).

This is a classic, and you need to watch it. Yes, it is cheesy--but get over it, there is a lot of great stuff to watch here. First of all, it is not just another Karate Kid movie with surfing instead of karate. Unlike karate kid, there is no person or group of people who the audience can easily and quickly pin as the antagonist. Rather than having someone or some group that is purely evil (to which no one can relate) funciton as the antagonist, in North Shore, (besides Lance Burkhardt who is not an unbelievably evil character) the antagonist is a way of surfing or, better yet, an attitude with which one surfs and also carries out his or her life. That was my second point. My final point for watching this movie is that provided here is a fun little exposure to culturally sensitive ideas of tourism and issues of cultural survival. This is a great movie; it is cheesy, but at the same time, you get great footage of waves, you get a critique of common ideas of tourism, and you get a critique of our profit maximizing society as a whole. Take it easy, relax, and enjoy.

This movie is a deep journey into the Psychie of a land locked soul surfer from Arizona (Rick Cane). He has traveled to the Mecca of surfing, the North Shore Oahu, to prove to himself and the nay-sayers, that he truley has the testicular fortitude to ride massive waves. Through a series of events he stumbles into good luck with a local board shaper (Chandler) and gets a deluxe personal surf-camp, all for the price of sweeping up the shaping shack. Rick gets injured in a stupid attempt to take off deep on the inside on first reef Pipe. He bonks the take off then proceeds to go over the falls, smacking the reef with the thin Houlee skin of his back. Kiala, local hottie, rides up and rescues him..... He makes a move like a rookie and she takes off...Secretly her loins begin to ache for him. Long story short Rick learns maturity, soul surfing, how to please women, gets in good with the locals and makes it back home in time for art school...Truely a masterpiece.
