"Once Upon a Time in America" was made by Leone as an alternate view of organized crime as well as an overview of late 19th/early 20th century USA. While his take isn't perfect (it's a film, after all), the vision is enlightening and entertaining.

i read somewhere that this version was too long to show in the theaters (229 msn)back in 1984 and see why there is 2discs here but one thing i can understand is that its a great movie. i loved deniro and woods performance. i can understand why i couldnt take my eyes off it. the movie is based on the book "the hoods" which was written by harry grey. grey was imprisioned while he wrote this and is suppose to be a true story. well one thing i know that is true: its worth the watch.

I first watched this in the mid eighties and had to watch the full film twice to really understand and appreciate the enormatiy and impact of this film. I love the way its cuts from past present and future and the haunting music blasts you away and adds to the atomosphere. The main effect it had on me is the harshness of life for the younger generation in those days and how life was so cheap. You must watch and stay with it, even with the scenes that are not quite PC as they explain the complex charactors and their weaknesses.

This film is truly a masterpiece. Every moment thru the long film awaits for what happens next. Remain spellbound when the movie ends.

The last time i saw this film was two years ago on tv. since then i have been waiting for it to come on dvd. Finally, its here... this story is focused on the past of a gangster and how he ends up with friends dead and more... The story was set in the 1960s but because of the flash backs it is mostly in the 1930s in the city, new york.

After reading the NY Times review of this just-released dvd I jumped at the chance to purchase it. After three nights of watching it (my husband and I couldn't get through it in one sitting) we both concurred that this movie was B O R I N G, too precious, too slow, overacted, underedited, overdirected - in fact, there IS a good reason it got panned. It stinks! The sets and scenes, however, were wonderful.

This Has to be the best movies that I have ever seen. I saw the full length feature. If you have never seen this, do yourself a favor, purchase this movie.

Honestly, I loved The Godfather Part I and II, Goodfellas, Scarface, etc. but this gangster flick is no where nearly as good as the above. First of all, it's jewish gangsters and the storyline is just all over the place.

Once Upon a Time in America should be held up on the same level as the Godfather films. this is a sincerely positive and exceptional effort by Mr. Leone to do a gangster epic - and it thrives well on its on success. DeNiro, Woods and the rest of the cast are excellant and the drama is top rate. Highly recommended
