Overview

Orphan

An outwardly angelic little girl displays an unforeseen devilish streak upon moving into the home of her new adoptive parents in this shocker starring Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga. In the aftermath of a miscarriage, prospective parents Kate (Farmiga) and John (Sarsgaard) find their lives turned upside down; their marriage is falling apart, and the demons of Kate's past begin manifesting themselves in a series of horrifying nightmares. Deciding that the best means of achieving some semblance of normalcy is to simply adopt, the dejected couple visits a local orphanage. There, they are both drawn to a nine-year-old girl named Esther. But Esther isn't as sweet as first impressions suggest, and almost immediately after welcoming the young child into their home, Kate and John suspect that something is terribly wrong with their adoptive daughter. Kate can see right through Esther's seraphic charm, though her attempts to convince everyone else of the truth go unheeded by her skeptical family and friends. By the time anyone bothers to take Kate seriously, it may be too late to prevent a devastating tragedy from unfolding.

I gave this movie 5 stars, not for being an amazing movie, but for being a good movie with an excellent ending twist and overall performance by the cast. Peter Sarsgaard "Jarhead", "Flightplan" & "Empire" stars with Vera Farmiga from "Running Scared" and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" in this creepy thriller. They have two children and want to adopt a third child. Welcome to the big screen Isabelle Fuhrman, she plays orphan Esther in the movie. A very sweet child who loves to paint, but isn't really friendly with the other orphans. If your like me the first time I saw this preview, I was thinking, wow did they copy off the movie The Good Son with Macaulay Culkin or what? A bad girl who does bad things. I was wrong, "Orphan" has alot more to it then that. This movie isn't going to scare you, but it will shock you. It has a very creepy feel to it right from the time you meet Esther in the movie. I watch alot of movies and I can honestly say, I'm finding it harder and harder to be impressed by a movie. "Orphan" impressed me, big time. Everyone I know that has seen the movie, enjoyed it. Good movie, good acting, with a insane suprise twist that you will never expect! Enjoy~

In the being of Orphan, there is a pond behind a big house; it has a family of three, a husband, a wife, and a son. The family decides to adopt a child after their loss of their second child. The mother goes to the forester care to see the adoption they had, after two days she pick a little girl around the same age as their son or so they thought. Orphan is my favorite movie because there were a lot of surprises. It was creative and jaw dropping throughout the movie. It kept my undivided attention, not only with the music, but with graphics. When I first watched Orphan, midway into the movie there was something going on, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. Orphan kept me in trance, I didn’t won’t to move or look away because I didn’t want to miss anything, it was the type of movie that I was would wait until the movie was over to do something. My favorite scenes were when the mother did a background check and her adopted daughter. After she did that things started to fall apart. The adopted doughtier tries to kill the mother and the step brother and seduces the father, it turns out this wasn’t the first time she’s done this to a family. And when she couldn’t have the father, she tries to kill the whole family. The camera angles are perfect. They zoom in just enough, so that I only focused on what they wanted me to. The camera angles were right in the nick-of-time. For example, when the adopted daughter set the tree house on fire with her step brother in side, he had no way out except the roof of the tree house. She had locked the latch to the outside of the tree house so he had to jump off the roof; luckily there was snow on the ground. Just as he hits the ground, the cameras caught the thump of the fall and the expression on the no the mothers face as she watched form the kitchen window. Overall, Orphan is a really good movie to watch. It kept me guessing what happen next, who suspect, and what it all boils down to. Orphan is a drama, action, and adventurous all in one. And to be truthful I watched Orphan four times in a row and each time I watched it, it felt like there was something I missed or didn’t catch the first few times.

I often get really excited watching the trailer for an upcoming new movie, and decide that this movie is one that I know will go see in theaters. This means paying the jacked up ticket price to see this supposedly unforgettable movie. After arriving and sitting through the previews in anticipation for the movie to begin, the opening credits finally show and my heart starts to race as some ditsy actress is helpless in a dumb situation that she got herself into. By the end of the movie I realize what a huge waste of time and money the movie has been. The Orphan, on the other hand, is no such movie. From the start I knew that this movie was going to be good, and it does not lose you until the ending credits. The Orphan is about a family that is looking to adopt after having a miscarriage. Little do they know though that Esther is definitely not the sweet little girl they imagined they were bringing into their home. As I watched the movie I saw the family slowly being torn apart. Esther's character is very disturbing and the actress displays excellent acting skills making her character seem realistic. She wears old fashioned dresses and talks very properly, so it made me wonder what is really going on with her. The actors in this movie were picked perfectly for their parts even down to the cute little sister that is so innocent but is sucked into this awful plot. The mother, played by Vera Farmiga, also co-starred in the movies Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Joshua. She plays a very annoyed and paranoid mother in The Orphan. I thought the actress was very believable. The father, played by Peter Sarsgaard, also starred in movies such as Jarhead and Rendition. His character is oblivious to everything that goes on around him. The son in the movie thinks Esther is an embarrassment to him at school and he gets on the wrong side of her. I thought the scenes between these two characters were the scariest. This movie was anything but predictable. The Orphan will have you on the edge of your seat for the entire movie. The director, Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed House of Wax, does a great job with the music making it frightening when it needs to be and quiet at other times. One thing that I got from this movie was that the world is a crazy place and always to be on your guard. This is the only movie that has made me scream out loud in a long time. Having a small innocent girl causing all this trouble makes this movie especially scary. The villain in most movies is usually a lunatic man or some kind of monster. The Orphan is quite the opposite, and that makes it particularly terrifying. The director was creative in this aspect of the movie. So many other movies are basically the same predictable plots, with different titles, and a couple of different scares throughout. The Orphan is definitely an original film that I would recommend to all of my friends to see. I give this movie 5 out of 5. I think that it is able to stand out from the other movies in its genre because the things that occur in this movie are so creepy. The Orphan is a great movie to buy because it is very shocking and the twist in the end will make you think twice before letting some stranger into your home. The story, combined with excellent casting and a great director, make this movie one not to miss.

I have mixed feelings about "Orphan." On the one hand, it meanders along at such a pedestrian pace in the beginning that I experienced a powerful urge to leave the theater when I saw it. On the other hand, I enjoyed the twist ending. It's an eye-opener. But the payoff destination is not quite worth the jejune journey getting there. In other words, I liked "Orphan" with strong reservations. A thriller needs to move along at a certain brisk pace, but this movie waited far too long to switch into high gear for it to generate many thrills before the final act. --Bryan Cassiday, author of "Fete of Death" and "Blood Moon"
