Phil Maturano: Afro-Cuban Drumming for the Drumset available in DVD
In the instructional release Phil Maturano: Afro-Cuban Drumming for the Drumset, acclaimed percussionist Maturano teaches novice drummers to play the fundamental rhythms of two different styles of Afro-Cuban jazz percussion. The program commences with on-camera illustrations of the various rhythms as played out on drumsets, and then teaches each viewer/participant how to fluidly incorporate those rhythms into his or her own performances. Instruction is accompanied by on-camera close-ups and detailed explanation of each pattern.
According to other websites, this DVD is encoded for PAL television systems, but in North America, NTSC encoding is used. Some DVD players, such as those found in personal computers, have PAL to NTSC converters. Most DVD players sold in North America, however, only play NTSC DVDs. This reflects my experience with this title, which was a little bit frustrating. Other than that, the quality of the DVD is good. Much of it is devoted to how drumset playing fits into different afro-cuban styles and toward the end there are some fairly heady rhythmic ideas and exercises to work through. If you are interested in this subject, there are unfortunately very few DVDs, but this provides a good overview of the subject.
