The Volume 1 tag included on this Pixar Short Films Collection -- in typical DVD nomenclature -- would normally suggest a compendium that has been split into multiple releases. But this is, in fact, a fairly comprehensive gathering of the short films produced by the creative entity that evolved into Pixar Animation Studios over the years, after its beginnings as part of George Lucas's Lucasfilm back in 1979. The only missing links are two shorts produced for Sesame Street in 1991, Light & Heavy and Surprise, and the newly produced Your Friend the Rat, which is available exclusively on the Ratatouille DVD release. Three of the films included here -- Tin Toy (1988), Geri's Game (1997), and For the Birds (2000) -- earned Academy Awards, and five others earned nominations. All the shorts include commentary from the animators, and a bonus production provides "A Short History" of the studio's groundbreaking short films.

Here's a collection of Pixar shorts that you've most likely never seen. Some of the characters, however, will immediately be familiar. We laughed a lot at some of the segments, nearly cried at some, and definitely chose our favorites which will be watched most often. This is a fun DVD for everyone, with the possible exception of those completely devoid of a sense of humor and the appreciation of the skill that went into creating them. It's a classic collection, a perfect addition to every video library.

We loved this set of shorts that are shown before Pixar movies. I have purchased 3 copies, because they are so much fun. No matter what the age of the viewer, there is something wonderful about them. Kids love to have a chance to pick their favorites, and take turns watching them. I can't wait until there are enough new ones to have Pixar 2.

I love this collection of animated shorts! They are clever little stories than can be enjoyed one at a time, or all in a row. The animation is such that ANY object in the world can become 'alive' and have personality. Although the films are best with sound, most of the cute little stories are universally enjoyable regardless of one's hearing or fluency.
