Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
The little gray cells of the great Hercule Poirot are as sharp as ever in Agatha Christie's Poirot Collector's Set 3, which includes three episodes from the third set of Poirot dramatizations to air on PBS's Mystery! series in the early '90s. In "The Kidnapped Prime Minister," Poirot is summoned by the British government to help find the missing minister, and he promptly scours rural England despite the fact that the victim went missing in France. "The Adventure of the Western Star" finds Poirot engaged to protect a valuable diamond owned by a famous Belgian film star. And, finally, strange doings at a flower show involve Poirot in the investigation of a mysterious murder by poison in "How Does Your Garden Grow?" All three mysteries nicely showcase Poirot's flair for drama and secrecy, as he keeps all clues and theories to himself until the last possible moment, generating as much suspense about his own investigation as about the crimes themselves. Series star David Suchet's portrayal of the great detective is perfection itself: His Poirot is smugly pompous and quintessentially fastidious in both his sleuthing and grooming, and it's simply a delight to hear Poirot berate his barber for trimming one sideburn 3mm shorter than the other. (Poirot measured them, of course!) The series' superb production design brings 1930s Art Deco elegance vividly to life. Add two well-cast sidekicks (Hugh Fraser and Pauline Moran) and Poirot's surly Scotland Yard foil, Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson), and the results are some of the smartest, most stylish hour-long detective stories ever to grace the small screen.
