Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Chas Turner
It should surprise no one, especially those haunted by that "French Mistake" ditty from Blazing Saddles, that Mel Brooks could and would give birth to a full-fledged musical, The Producers. Still, few would have foreseen the production becoming the 800-pound gorilla of the Great White Way, conquering both Broadway box office records and the Tony Awards. This behind-the-scenes film of The Producers recording sessions, directed by Susan Froemke (Grey Gardens), traces the "titillation" of the process wonderfully, giving viewers a chance to see Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane step into and out of their zany characters. (Broderick's between-songs Marlon Brando impression is as magnificent as any moment in the show.) Brooks, for his part, is unabashedly proud of the show and virtually hosts the movie. Who can blame him? Raucous, vulgar, and utterly glorious (most of the time, it's all three), the show's score beams with sweet melodies married to brilliant, often bawdy lyrics; it seems that, after a career of using Cole Porter and Noël Coward as frameworks for parody, Brooks is proving himself their worthy heir. From "The King of Broadway" -- a prophetic, semiautobiographical paean to comebacks -- to the sublime ballad "Till Him" to the gut-busting, justifiably infamous showstopper "Springtime for Hitler," these sessions catch the wit and polish that propelled The Producers straight to the top.

Now I'm not big for documentaries. In fact they are usually quite boring. But this is so funny. Not only are the songs funny but the time in between them are laugh out loud material. Watching Matthew Broderick immitate Marlon Brando is enough to buy this movie. This is the cast of The Producers (the best musical of all time) making the cast album. Buy this soon!!!
