Good: the sweeping background images of Tibet Bad: The acting (even taking into account the language barrier and subtitles) is generally over-the-top caricature. The British actors and Western scenes are especially terrible. The propaganda: This movie is an obvious response to Western films that focus on the Chinese takeover of Tibet (such as Seven Years In Tibet that I chose to watch at the same sitting). Even taking into account the differences in point of view of the Chinese, this poorly made movie could hardly convince anyone but the most naive viewer that it is anything but jingoistic propaganda. The quality of the production is hard to take. At times boom mikes come into view at the top of the screen, and during one early scene a mule is distractingly relieving himself while a converstation is going on between the two Brits (unless this is an awkard attempt at symbolism). Avoid this unless you want to view it as a cultural artifact: it tells you loads about the Chinese government's attempted use of the arts to didactically portray its point of view
