This film adaptation of the Broadway musical based loosely on Puccini's opera La Bohème features many members of the original cast. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger (Adam Pascal), Mimi (Rosario Dawson), Tom (Jesse L. Martin), and Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia); Maureen (Idina Menzel) deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne (Tracie Thoms), wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin (Taye Diggs) has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark (Anthony Rapp), an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part.

I saw Rent on Broadway in 2004 and thought it was an alright production but an amazing storyline. When I heard the movie was opening I knew I had to see it. Rent was more amazing then the production and brought new life to the same familiar faces. Anthony Rapp was extraordinary as Mark Cohen the filmmaker who eyewitnesses and interacts in all of the craziness. Roger and Mimi(played by Adam Pascal and Rosario Dawson) sparkled as a couple who find each other in an opening rendition of "RENT". A heartwrenching performance by Wilison Jermaine Heredia as Angel who has AIDS, a heart of gold, and makes all the friends realize how lucky they all are to be together. Angel's partner throughtout the story is Tom Collins otherwise known as Jesse L. Martin. His rendition of "Santa Fe" really makes you want to leave your life behind an open up a restaurant. Idina Menzel, notably from the Broadway musical "WICKED", was outrageous and humorous as Maureen the ex girlfriend of Mark and new girlfriend of Joanne. If "Jump Over the Moon" doesnt make you crack up I dont know what will. As for her lover, Joanne, cooly played by Tracie Thoms, she shows off her vocal ability brilliantly in "Tango: Maureen" which afterwards makes you want to learn the tango. The most pleasing part besides the characters and songs were the actors. Chris Columbus made a brilliant move to cast the entire original Broadway cast for the movie. The only newcomers being Tracie Thoms and Rosario Dawson. If you like musicals or just like a story that keeps you upbeat Rent is the movie that makes you want to believe in "La Vie Boheme". I know I did!

I did not care for this musical at all. The subject matter was probably more off-putting than the music. It was extremely dark and depresing. Not what I generally look for in entertainment.

RENT WAS AWESOME. That is all to it. I did not know there was a Broadway version but I both enjoyed both versions. (musical and movie.) It made me cry during 'Without You.' It makes you realize there is 'no day but today' and we should live it. I also loved 'La Vie Boheme' as the bohemians of Avenue A make fun of their lives and the lives of other people. To them, it was just that day to forget their problems. It truly shows "today for you, tommorrow for me."

This is a must see. Living with the virus that encompasses this entire feature really makes it truly hit home. Although one wouldn't need that minute detail to feel the energy and power that this film embodies. I definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone, it will truly touch your heart and push you to tears many times over.
