From Media Blasters' Guilty Pleasures series comes the 1989 samurai-fueled action stinker, Samurai Cop. Complete with an introduction and commentary by renowned drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs, this is one disc that is sure to please. Just like Briggs' partnership with Elite (whose releases include The Double-D Avenger and Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter), Media Blasters has wrangled in the outspoken champion of trash cinema to shed light on their catalogue too, starting with this hilariously bad Lethal Weapon rip-off. Unlike those other releases, this flick easily stands on its own entertainment-wise, so pairing it with an inevitable cheap price tag and the great commentary makes for DVD gold. Speaking of the track, there's no one that handles these kinds of junkers better than Briggs. His mile-a-minute wit mixed with impeccable taste in cheese creates a perfect companion to Matt Hannon's (aka Samurai Cop) tremendous hairdo and endless stretches of platinum B-flick dialogue. Also on the disc is a 12-minute interview with none other than the Maniac Cop himself, Robert Z'Dar, in which the veteran actor spills the beans on his one and only sex scene, which this movie was lucky enough to showcase. A photo gallery is included as well, with stills from the film mixed with promotional shots of a hot bikini shoot with the cast (as if you didn't get enough of Hannon in a Speedo already!). Trailers on the disc include other Guilty Pleasures gems, such as Sex Bomb, Strike Me Deadly, Mission Kill Fast, and Blood Shack -- another Joe Bob-presented disc released in tandem with this one. Picture and sound quality are washed out and dull, though to be honest, Samurai Cop should never really look better than this (that's part of its charm, kiddies). Hats off to Media Blasters for another stellar disc that is sure to put holes in many enthusiasts pockets.
