Overview

Saw

The directorial debut from filmmaker James Wan, this psychological thriller comes from the first screenplay by actor Leigh Whannell, who also stars. Whannell plays Adam, one of two men chained up in a mysterious chamber. The other, Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes), like Adam, has no idea how either of them got there. Neither of them are led to feel optimistic by the man lying between them dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Together, Adam and Dr. Gordon attempt to piece together what has happened to them and who the sadistic madman behind their imprisonment is. Also starring Danny Glover and Monica Potter, Saw premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

I love this movie! It was not predictable at all and it was very interesting and suspenseful. I didn't even find it that gory. It was excellent.

This is one of the best and smartest horror movies in years. It has the atmospere and intelligence of Seven only it's better.

Let's start off with the fact that director James Wan and writer/actor Leigh Whannell (he plays main character Adam) had the right ideas, the right setting, fantastic story, but the WRONG execution. The cast of intertwined stories and characters is brilliant. An appropriately inept Danny Glover (who knew?), wayward Cary Elwes and a peeping tom Lehigh Whannell all play their roles with aplomb and can't be faulted for the lack of overall polish this movie has. A game playing serial killer who pits his victims against each other in order to for them to 'appreciate' life (one victim says he helped me) more has you guessing throughout the film. There is a twist that you won't see until it hits. The story is told through present and hyper stylized flashbacks that occur as the main characters recall more of how they got into their current situation. Saw gives some the most gruesome and cerebral death scenes since Seven. The problem is too many loose ends are left at the conclusion of the film. Nothing is too cliche and for the most part the ideas behind the story are well thought out, but where Seven and Silence of the Lambs don't let up Saw sort gives up. The first 40 minutes are intense and there is no wait the movie cuts right to the chase, but nothing happens of any conseuqunce until the game expires and some of the flashbacks lead you to believe the killer has some grand motives for his ways, but being that mad beacuse some people don't appreciate life is little hard to swallow. Latley, there has a been a lack of good horror movies, Saw is good just not great. Will you be disappointed probably not, but you won't be yearning for a sequel either. Saw is not a waste of time and fits the thriller/slasher movie bill quite well. Wan and Whannell put this flick together on pocket change (in movie terms anyways) and shot at a blistering pace 18 days total shooting time. Lets hope if Wan and Whannell make another movie there's more time and budget because the chariot is there, but they need the ponies to pull it next time.

I have not been so impressed with a movie in such a long time, but this movie really quinched my thirst for a fantastic artistic and well written movie. Between the suspenseful scenes and the mystery of the entire film, you will not move an inch until the credits are done playing. Absoultely amazing!!

Saw has a meaning to it belive it or not. You will see this even more in saw2. "jiggsaw"" shows that you you must have a near death experience to love life and charish it the way it should be. Also if you dont aprishiate it you dont deserve it but you do deserve a second chance. The second chance is to get out of his games alive.

I loved this movie I really didn't think this movie was very gory or scary. But the movie had a very good storyline to it and it made you think.

Saw is the first real horror movie of 2004! Too many sorry PG-13 horror movies and too many remakes! It's gory and nice, the other movie that I believe should be 2nd to Saw on good horror movies of the year Limited Snickers: Series Of Unfortunate Events with Jim Carey.

"Saw" is a classic by any standards. It's often negatively compared to "Se7en", though I don't see why, as the two bear little resemblance, and "Saw" is creatively superior, anyway. The premise revolves around a serial killer who actually has personality and depth. The biggest ace in the hole is that the writers have mastered creating an intruiging villain who actually wants his victims to survive, and walk away with a moral lesson learned. The way that the movie accomplishes the idea is also brilliant. The flashback system makes room for mystery and great twists. I especially loved the twist ending, which fools you into thinking that you have everything figured out, then hits you with something you never saw coming in the last two minutes, leading to a particularly chilling fate for one of the protagonists. Additionally worth noting is the iconic "Reverse Beartrap" scene. Just imagine a device hooked up to your jaw that's going to slowly pry it open until you die. Just the thought of that makes me shudder. What's exceptionally horrifying, though, is the means the victim must take to escape. I won't give anything more than that away, though. Not to say that "Saw" is perfect. I think that casting Cary Elwes was a mistake, at least for his role. Acting is probably the biggest weakness of "Saw", though the faults aren't too much of a distraction, and are forgiveable, considering that this was a very low-budget movie. I recommend "Saw" to all fans of the horror, suspense, and psychological genres. You won't be disappointed.

The plot idea is somewhat interesting, but the acting is wretched. Even for a horror movie.

The oddset but smartest horror movie in a long time.Although I'm only 13, I didn't get too scared. My mom said she sort of wanted to see it because it was a psycological thriller like 'The Sixth Sense'. I enjoyed it a lot . Warning:Not for the squeamish.

I have never loved a “scary” movie so much! It wasn’t scary only scary…it was twisted! And the writer and director did a great job with the story line and deserve a big hand. To think someone could think of something like this is a little freaky! Who knew that a movie could be based on two men in a bathroom and actually be good? It keeps you on the edge of your seat and everyone should see it! I loved the different scenes with the different people that had to play the game. They were so creative and sick! The ending was great too, to think that the guy was in the room the whole time. It was unpredictable and had great twists and turns. This movie deserves all the stars it can get. I hope that the second and third one, are as great as the first. Hopefully they will stay simple yet mentally complex!

I thought saw was an excellent movie. It had a great plot plot and had an awesome unexpected ending. It is great movie that leads you one way and then brings you to the best part of the movie. Only disapointments are that i thought it would be bloodier. this is and excellent movie for people who love movies that keep you guessing till the end. I give it 5 stars!!
