Overview

Scrooge

Scrooge was designed as a follow-up to 1968's Oliver!, the Oscar-winning musicalization of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. The umpteenth musical version of Dickens' 1843 novelette A Christmas Carol, Scrooge features several sprightly Leslie Bricusse songs, including the bona fide hit "Thank You Very Much." Buried under mounds of latex, Albert Finney is Ebenezer Scrooge. The Three Ghosts who turn the miserly Scrooge's life around on Christmas Eve are portrayed by Edith Evans (Past), Kenneth More (Present) and Paddy Stone (Yet to Come). Sir Alec Guinness also appears as a fussy, slightly effeminate Marley's Ghost. Intriguingly, Finney performs his many songs live, without post-production dubbing.

As obscure as this one is, it is the one Christmas Carol movie that we look forward to from year to year. But we couldn't find it on TV this year, and many times when we do it is edited for time. So it was time to break down and purchase it. The songs are wonderfully catchy, the ghosts in the beginning are spooky as all heck, the characters are well-played, and the finale makes us happy. What can we say? We like musicals, thank you very much!!

This is by far the best interpretation of the Dickens classic! The music is outstanding and Albert Finney is a marvelous as Scrooge. If you love Christmas, timeless classics and musicals, this is a MUST have!

I'm addicted to this version of the Charles Dickens classic. (This recent purchase is to replace my first copy!) The cast is wonderful, the sets and costumes delightful, but my favorite part of all is the music. It's what sets this version apart and makes the viewing experience a joy.

Yes, the Alistair Sim version is reputedly 'the' classic version of this classic tale, but for me this supersedes it on three counts. First, the casting is just perfect with some really heavyweight actors playing the roles, and an amazing Albert Finney made up to look 40 years older! Then the sets and photography and special effects are just superb, totally capturing the Victorian atmosphere and lending a real spookiness to the ghosts. And last but definitely not least, is the glorious score by Leslie Bricusse, which punctuates the picture beautifully without being gratuitous or overly sentimental. To me this is THE version and I play it every Christmas. Albert Finney really is the consummate Scrooge, but when he undergoes his 'transformation' his acting is totally irresistible. This is a real masterpiece and on Blue Ray should be just wonderful as the sets and photography are just marvelous.

I was 12 when I saw this at Radio City Musical for my birthday. It's my favorite Christmas movie of all time! Had the VHS for years - now I'm ready to get the DVD. Does not show up on TV anymore.

This is a literary classic come to life. It is extremely well-told as well as entertaining that adults and children will appreciate. While it is a Christmas tale, its message is applicable 365 days per year.

This tale often told is a splendid musical with the best catchy tunes and music! Albert Finney truly plays his part (drinking milk of human kindness, scowling, and rejoicing)The ghost of christmas past is the slowest but climbs the mountain from there! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

"Thank you very much" for making this wonderful version of A Christmas Carol so enjoyable. It's a family tradition each holiday season, and yes, we sing right along! We would LOVE for the soundtrack to be released. "Father Christmas", "I Like Life" and many more! I hope the powers that be release it soon!

I hate musicals, but I love this movie. Its perfect from start to finish with many important morals sewn into its fabric. I love the story of a man's redemption and how he was able to change the lives of the people around him when he realized how much their lives enriched his own. Dickens was a genius and who better to play a major role in this story than Albert Finney even if the movie doesn't accurately depict the book. Out of all the depictions of this story, I hold this one in the highest regards and I believe Dickens would say that this movie's mood was tantamount to that of his beloved story. Merry Christmas everybody!!!

Well, IT'S FINALLY HERE! 'Thank You Very Much'. The critics hated it, said it was too corny, too sweet. Well, when I first saw it in 1970, I loved 'SCROOGE'. I figured that the critics were only frustrated out of work actors, writers, composers, and directors. Full of sour grapes. I saw 'Scrooge' that year well over 45 times. Let's see, I would have been, 15 years old, and my admission to the theatre then would have been, .25¢, a huge popcorn, .25¢ and a 22 oz. Coke, .10¢ and a big nestles chocolate bar, .05¢. Boy have times changed! Now to the film. GREAT score by an accomplished and AWARD winning musical genius, Leslie Bricusse, who also gave us, Willy Wonka, and others. The Cast, Albert Finney as SCROOGE, what a great entertaining performance. He is supported by a great cast, Sir Alec Guinness, as the late, Jacob MARLEY, Dame Edith Evans as Ghost of Christmas Past, and Kenneth More as the Ghost of Christmas Present. The ever favourite retelling of Charles Dickens', 'A Christmas Carol' set to music and dance. A great compliment to that other Dickens' hit, 'Oliver'. 'Scrooge' is full of life, love, music, & dance. This is a beautifully updated, yet authentic to the period, TREASURE. The critics are probably still mixed, but, I for one would like to say, 'THANK YOU VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH, THANK YOU VERY, VERY, V-E-R-Y MUCH!' This Christmas is starting out on a Big Bright Note! Thank You Paramount Home Entertainment! You brought 'Scrooge' out on dvd before another Christmas Passed! So, ADD some Holiday Cheer to your Christmas this year and Now everyone can, 'Sing a Song of Gladness and Cheer!' The BEST Ebeneezer SCROOGE is FINALLY HERE! I have performed in the Milwaukee Repetory Theatre's 'A Christmas Carol' over the years, completeing well over 2000 performances, if like the Story, take it from me, this is the BEST!

I highly recommend this wonderful holiday movie - it's become our family's annual Christmas Eve tradition. The music, songs and dances are just wonderful, and Albert Finney is amazing as Scrooge! This is the most beautiful version of 'A Christmas Carol' you will ever see!

Of all the adaptations of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", this is by far my favorite. The music is fantastic--singable and catchy. This film has been a favorite of my family for many years and we never get tired of it. During the holidays, we're as likely to break into one of the songs from this musical as we are a traditional carol. Albert Finney is fabulous as old Scrooge and his transformation from miserable to true happiness is very believable. This story of the redemption of a man never gets old.

My Mother bought this movie on VHS when I was a little girl and it's been a part of my yearly Christmas movie list since. My husband even considers it one of his favorites and he had never seen it before we met.

My dad first took us to see this in 1970 at the theater, where we immediately fell in love with old Mr. Scrooge, played by Albert Finney! For two years after we continued to venture out on those cold Saturday afternoons, every Christmas season, to see it at the theater - it became our family tradition! Suddenly it disappeared for years! We always spoke of 'Scrooge the Musical' and when it finally resurfaced a few years back on VHS, there were four, now adult siblings, very excited to see it reappear! It wasn't until recently, that all four of us happened to talk about 'Scrooge' with Albert Finney, and unbeknownst to us, all four of us have made it a family tradition to make a big bowl of popcorn, pop in the tape, and view 'Scrooge' with our own children! I thank my dad (who still watches it every Christmas with mom!) for taking us all to see it that first year...it made such an impression that 33 years later, we now share it with our children! Great family movie and AWESOME music (we sing it all year round around the house!!) This is my all-time favorite holiday movie!

This movie has brought the Christmas spirit into my home for decades. I would love to play the soundtrack while stringing popcorn and cranberries for my freshly chopped tree before the pine needles hit the carpet. Does anyone have any info on when the soundtrack will be released? Signed, 'Old Potato'

This is a family favorite at our house. We watch it every Christmas season. Christmas Past scenes are infused with hauntingly beautiful music and the music of Christmas Present scenes will have you toe-tapping and singing long after the movie is finished.
