Shakespeare Wallah

The second feature from filmmaking duo James Ivory and Ismail Merchant, 1965's Shakespeare Wallah was the breakthrough film for the ever-collaborating director and producer. Centering on a Shakespearean theater company in India who struggle to remain relevant as British influence in the subcontinent dwindles, the film has been released to DVD as part of The Criterion Collection. Transferred in widescreen with a mono soundtrack and English captions for the hearing impaired, Shakespeare Wallah shares the disc with interviews with Merchant and Ivory and The Delhi Way, a short documentary from director Ivory.
