In this western adventure, Shalako (Sean Connery) leads a hunting expedition in the wilds of New Mexico. There they run across an Apache camp where the Countess Irina (Brigitte Bardot) is being held hostage. When the Indians retaliate by destroying the camp of the European aristocrats, Shalako must use his wiles to battle the Indians and the jealous members of his own hunting party. The camp is robbed by Fulton (Stephen Boyd), who runs off with the wife of Sir Dagget (Jack Hawkins). Lady Boyd (Honor Blackman) leaves her rich husband in a dramatic split decision prompted by the marital discord between her and her pompous husband. Shalako leads the survivors through dangerous mountain terrain, engaging in climactic hand-to-hand combat.

"Shalako" begins with a crawl from original novelist author Louis L'Amour and that should tell you what's wrong from the start. There is much speechifying during the film but little dramatic dialogue, and this western comes off as more a poor civics lesson than a rousing adventure. The cast is a curious international mix featuring Sean Connery, Peter Van Eyck, Honor Blackman, Jack Hawkins and Woody Strode (as Chato??!). Stephen Boyd fares best as an untrustworthy hunting party scout, and 60's sex kitten Brigitte Bardot comes off the strangest; in fact, Ms. Bardot's seemingly endless supply of pancake make-up through a wilderness trek provides the film it's only (unintentional) comic relief. The dramatic highlight, an early morning Apache attack, comes far too late and far too early in the film to propel any kind of absorbing dramatic arc. Instead we are left with indifferent direction by Edward Dmytryk, and far too much free time to notice that both Connery and Blackman were far more interesting in "Goldfinger" than in this obvious career step-down. The DVD print is grainy, but this reflects the original release print.
